Empress Naoki sits motionless in her chair, steeling herself. That this situation is reminiscent of another in her memory suggests that she ought to have more gray hairs than she does, but such is the burden she bears.
Footsteps outside, her ears snap forward. Ulfang’s voice. He’s come to help—but is cut off. She can’t make sense of the noise but something carried him away. Something monstrous, if it moved that mountain of a man. Somewhere else, a crash, bricks falling. All of that is very troubling, Naoki thinks. Incredibly so.
Then: Crack! The sound of thunder.
Naoki winces involuntarily, unprepared for the loud noise.
She recovers to see the doors swinging open and watches as a cloaked man enters. Behind him are Greed and Lust, just as Alden described. He must be the mastermind himself, and what he says confirms it.
“I facilitated the rekindling of the empathy you snuffed out,” she confirms, standing. “That you would consider him as such bespeaks your own lack of same.”
The look of hate and loathing The Empress regards Pride with could melt Sunmetal. Here before her stands he who is responsible for untold pain and suffering. For innumerable lives lost needlessly in pursuit of wicked ends, including those being taken all around her—the lives of her citizens, at this very moment. Even if looks could kill, Pride deserves far worse.
“And what circumstances are these, then?” she queries, level tone at odds with her expression. “What role would you have me play in your ‘grand plan’?”

"Oh ho!" Pride says in his perfectly civil tone. It was unnerving in how utterly normal it sounded. There was no sinister undertones, no hint of malice, he sounded like any common man might sound while talking with someone he considered a peer. It laid bare the utter lack of morality in the being before her when his utter lack of concern for the countless lives lost that he was directly responsible for this day. "Such judgement from an Empress. I'll admit to not having looked too closely into your past deeds but I must wonder if you should be casting that particular first stone." There was just enough of a twist to those words that Naoki might wonder if he did in fact know some of what she'd done behind closed doors.
Strolling forward as calm as you would like he exams the room and shrugs. "The circumstance in which I have been hired to kidnap you. Honestly, not a nut I would have chosen to crack under normal circumstances but the price was right." He stops and turns to exam a bit of art on the wall. "Its all business to me your eminence, this is not some grand scheme of revenge on my part. I am a professional, I don't let things get personal." There is a pause and then he says a bit louder. "Although I am not entirely perfect on that end if you would just give me a moment to explain Alden."
Turning he faces the empress. "Let's see how far that so-called empathy you've rekindled goes and how much you value it, eh?" He starts pacing as he considers a few things and then says. "I am sure you've heard the reports, two of my set are in the Bazaar, the other two are here, so where are the last two? Well, the answer to that is simple." He spreads his hands wide. "They are going to pick up the next Set for me to train. Six children all conveniently in one place ready to be taught to kill and obey. Just like their father." There is a nice long dramatic pause as he lets those words sink in for all gathered.

Age: 30
Physical Description: Alden is 6 even, with shoulder length messy black hair, and several days worth of beard stubble. He is handsome, with a powerful jaw, mid set cheek bones, and a perpetual grin that makes him seem younger than he really is. His bright green eyes, constantly sparkle with barely contained mirth. He has the lithe well muscled body of a swordsmen, and he moves with considerable grace and dexterity.
If one where to take more thorough examination of Alden's eyes they may notice a further detail. Around the outside edge of his iris's there's an intricate series of minuscule grey runes.
Alden rarely removes his shirt, but should someone see him with it off, they would find his body to be covered in scar tissue. Starting from just below his neckline, there is very little space that does not sport some relic of a past injury. A particularly observant person may also note that among these scars, some are a bright scarlet. These scarlet scars form an intricate series of runes hiding among the others.
Those of a more magical bent may be able to decipher the runes in his eyes and on his skin. Identifying them as sigils more commonly found on magical items. The most obvious effect of the runes on his body, are increased speed, strength, and durability.
The runes on his eyes give him the ability to detect magical auras and residue, as well as allowing him to see through low level illusions and glamours. They also maintain his vision regardless of the current light level, and even if there is a sudden shift. His eyes are also capable of dropping into the infrared spectrum in complete darkness.
The rune work on his body enhances his natural strength, speed, endurance, durability, and reflexes to almost super human levels. The effects make him a formidable opponent for most magical creatures though only because they are supplemented by exceptional skill.
This means that all though he is almost super human in a straight contest of strength or speed he would most likely loose to most other magically enhanced humanoids such as vampires or were wolves.
Alden's runes also greatly increase his healing rate allowing him to recover from injuries that would normally take a few months for a person to recover from in a few short weeks. Not only do Alden's runes accelerate healing they also enhance it. A normal persons body will repair itself until it is functioning again then stop, thanks to the runes Alden's body will continues to fix itself until it is in near perfect condition. His healing abilities enhance his already prodigious stamina as it repairs muscle damage and lactic build up and it also increases longevity as he does not accumulate long term damage as most people do.
Finally his body runes provide protection from people attempts to find him magically. Detection spells will be obfuscated their readings on his location being off by about 20 meters. Long distance scrying and tracking spells are only able to narrow down his area to somewhere within a mile radius. It should be noted that these protections can be overcome by someone with sufficient power or ingenuity.
His runes cannot be removed unless they are cut off of his body using an appropriate ritual knife and magic. If the runes are disrupted in any other way they will simply grow back in a few weeks time.
The final thing that only someone versed in rune craft and enchanting would be able to tell is this: The process of these runes being carved into his bodies would have been unbelievably painful. A normal person would have been driven insane or to suicide if they had this happen to them. During the carving process un-directed magical energies would begin to take hold and tear apart your soul. The pain this would not cease until the rune pattern was completed. This means the pain caused would be on a spiritual and physical level of incredible magnitude.

As Pride finishes speaking Naoki would see Alden emerge. He is behind Pride, Greed, and Lust. Coming out of the shadows of the corridor where he had, clearly, been laying in wait for the right moment to strike. But he could no longer hide because he needed direction. She would see that the armour he had commissioned was nearly identical to that which the set wore. The same mottled greys and black to provide night-time camouflage. The same layers of leather with thicker layers over vital organs hiding strike plates of enchanted steel.
The only difference was Alden wore no mask, his hood was down, and he had his scarf and badge of office wrapped around his waist. He gives Naoki a questioning look, they both knew the score at that moment. If he left her alone with Pride then she was almost certainly going to be kidnapped. But if he didn't leave to rescue his children immediately, they almost certainly would be kidnapped instead. He was facing a choice between the woman who had given him everything he had and the children that made his life worth living.
The one-time assassin, one-time enforcer, current family man and right hand of the empress was faced with this choice. As he often did when given a hard choice he now looked at the empress for guidance. Not because she was his leader but because she was his friend, his best friend. "What do I do?" He doesn't say it aloud but the question is in his eyes as his rune scared orbs lock with Naoki and the full weight of the choice is in her hands as well.

Greed’s gaze was ever swiveling between Naoki and her guards as the trio entered her office. His sword was already drawn and at the ready, while his other hand was placed on the pouch at his hip. So far the plan was moving forward without much issue, while this was to be expected given Pride’s track record, it was still rather impressive given the difficulty of this job… And then Alden revealed himself.
Turning swiftly on his heel, Greed locked his gaze on the man. The former Set of Wrath and the only person as far as he knew who had gotten one over on Pride. Despite the drug’s effects of repressing emotions, a dull feeling of jealousy throbbed within him as he looked at Alden. To be one so strong that they had beaten their own master…
Clearing his mind of such impure thoughts, Greed focused all his attention on the situation at hand as he emptied his mind of distractions. Distractions are what would get him killed. If Alden didn’t do as Pride wished and leave to save his children, it would be Greed’s job to engage him in combat. He was the most skilled duelist of The Set and the one with the best chance of delaying Alden from killing Pride himself. If he could buy even just a little time, he had complete faith in Pride’s abilities to put an end to Alden once and for all.

Empress Naoki squints, ears flattening. She looks between them, Pride, Alden, Greed, and Lust hanging out there casually in the back. Her mouth slides from one side of her face to the other. The tension is palpable.
The Empress shakes her head, rejecting the premise. “Alternately:” she says, raising one finger to Pride, “Fuck you.”
Beneath the desk, Naoki surreptitiously presses down a tile with her foot. It ticks quietly and is then echoed by a far louder TOCK, echoing throughout the chamber as the magic takes hold.
Through the greater part of The Empress’s office, time slows to a stop. A trap—the only one of its kind, devised for this express purpose. Her would-be kidnappers, Alden standing by them, and some of the Sentinels in front of her desk are frozen in time, such that it would seem to them the world around them would skip from the moment before the trap triggered to immediately after. Naoki, and all the Sentinels adjacent to or behind her desk, are unaffected.
Usually, the protocol would be for her to leave, have elites handle the situation, and call Grandma. But Grandma’s not here, so Naoki will take great pleasure in taking the matter into her own hands.
Without pause or hesitation, The Empress stands and produces a huge red gemstone from somewhere on her person. Holding it out toward Pride, still many paces away over by the door, she glares at him as he stands there smugly in his cloak. The gem begins to glow.
“She’s not worth considering as a threat, she’s just a soft bureaucrat,” The Empress mumbles mockingly as she lines up the shot. The gemstone grows increasingly brighter in her hand, casting a harsh red glow across her armor and desk. Heat radiates out in waves, immediately melting the nearby candle and causing her hair to billow in the wind.
He thinks he’s so damn clever. … And he is, of that, there is no doubt. Pride’s plan, the full extent of which she will never know, has done well to get him to this point. The fact that he was able to get this far and present the dilemma he has is highly concerning and will bring about changes to ensure nothing like it ever happens again—of that Naoki is sure. The fact that Alden’s children aren’t under better guard is honestly a huge, very avoidable mistake on their part. But Pride isn’t above mistakes either, and underestimating Empress Naoki isn’t one he’ll be making twice.
“Too merciful an end,” she whispers. He won’t even feel it.
The noise is dreadful. A dreadful metallic ripping sound, like claws of hellfire tearing through the air as it were a chalkboard, accompanied by searing heat and blinding light as a beam of raw fire-aspected energy lances out from the gemstone in The Empress’s hand to utterly destroy all that stands before it. It would likely sound very familiar to the handful of surviving Medanese refugees living in Isra, as it is the very same gemstone then-High-Lady Naoki condemned the Goraians for using in their coup and to repress their captive citizens. Repossessed by Grandma during the invasion, it now serves a far nobler cause. Thankfully, due to the height of The Citadel and the shot’s level angle, there will be no mile-deep crater in Isra — only significant damage to The Citadel’s walls.
However, the incredible discharge of energy disrupts the time-trap, freeing those that remain. To them, it would seem the act of Naoki flipping off Pride erased the rotten bastard right down to the lower half of his boots.
The Empress remains standing, a wicked grin on her face. The huge red gemstone is gone, replaced by an assortment of smaller ones held between her fingers. She isn’t subtle about pressing more tiles with her foot, but this time the effects aren’t as apparent.
“Haru is coming,” she tells Alden, raising one hand toward Greed. “These two, then to your house, then the plaza for the last two.”
To Torrin, “Then deploy The Legion to retake the city.”

The laughter is incredibly disturbing. It was the first time a crack in Pride's facade was heard and the true extent of the malice of the creature that had sent Isra spiralling into chaos was made clear. It was, to put it bluntly, inhuman, terrifying, and utterly without emotion. Yet it spoke of such a potent and powerful malevolence that one might wonder if the voice making it had more in common with the formless entities of the void beyond the portal in the sky above the citadel than with humans.
"What did you think just because you cut off the legs of the serpent the plan would fall apart your eminence?"
The remains on the floor had caught fire, the robe burning away as it pushes what remains of its body up to look at her. The black skeleton that had lain underneath the robe until this moment now on full display as the obsidian mask drops from the bare grinning skull. The blast of the laser would have killed any living thing but Pride had been dead for a very long time, he had been dead since Alden had gutted him nearly eight years ago. But death was no excuse to stop conducting business.
"I figured you would have some kind of trap like that. Though I'll admit its efficacy was beyond what even I was prepared for."
It didn't take a particularly large leap in logic to figure out just what this monster before her was. Pride was a lich, which meant that destroying his bones was more of an inconvenience than a debilitating blow. The skull looks over those gathered and he snorts.
"You can't escape your dilemma's so easily anymore your eminence. I was not here as a combatant, I was here as a distraction. Lust, Greed you have your orders. Capture the empress, get that crystal if you can kill anyone who gets in your way. But fight defensively." He adds a cruel chuckle entering his voice. "With Alden here, I am not certain of your success but as long as you can delay him then we can secure the children. Envy and Gluttony are already entering his home it won't take them long."
Then the skeleton collapses the bones falling apart as the animating force leaves the body. The obsidian mask explodes into splinters of razor-sharp glass. Lust doesn't hesitate he surges forward towards Torrin and his men. The royal guards had seen High Marshal Alden fight before and they knew that against an opponent of similar strength and speed their odds were slim. But they could definitely handle one of them so as long as Alden handled Greed they could win here today.

The time trap did not work perfectly on those in the room with rune scared bodies. They were affected but not to the same degree, their magic resistance runes burned and their body's natural speed and reflexes took over. But the power of the time stop was such that even they could barely do more than react by the time that Naoki fired her laser. Alden managing to take a single step forward by the time the barrier shattered under the force of Naoki's attack.
Then he blinks in surprise to see the smouldering corpse of Pride on the ground. Was it finally over? Of course, it was not. Alden watches in fascination as Pride gets up and keeps speaking. His encyclopedic knowledge of monsters drilled into him by the one before him filling in the gap. This was not good, it meant that Pride was going to be far, far more difficult to deal with than he had ever thought.
By the end of it though, he was terrified. A man who had, to this point, never known fear was utterly and truly terrified. His children were about to be taken and if he didn't go to them now... But if he left than Naoki would certainly be lost. He freezes as the decision racks his body and once again his eyes go to the Empress. Teetering between the two choices. His duty or his family, which should he choose? What did she want him to choose?

While the rapid series of events would leave any normal human reeling, Greed was far from normal. The moment the field releases, Greed sprung into action. While Alden was still likely the greatest threat here, the Empress had just revealed that she was far from helpless. If she was allowed to continue using her magic, without Pride to back them up he and Lust would be placed in a terrible position. He needed to bring her down, and quickly.
It was a great risk, but a risk he had to take. And if there was ever a time Alden wouldn’t be thinking clearly enough to act, this would be it. Doing the unthinkable, Greed spun to face Naoki, leaving his back turned to Alden. In a motion that was little more than a blur, he pulled several glass vials from his pouch while tossing them up and into the air. Smashing all of them with a single swing of his sword, he held his empty hand palm forward and unleashed his ability.
The countless shards of small metal bits, each and every one of them soaked in poison were launched forward at immense speed as they hurled towards both Naoki and her guards. While most of them were blocked by the armor of the guards and Naoki, a single shard grazed Naoki’s cheek. However, Greed wasn’t done yet. This poison took time to immobilize those exposed to it and giving Naoki any time to do anything wasn’t an option.
Gritting his teeth while firmly digging his heels into the ground, he pointed his outstretched palm at Naoki and once more unleashed his power. Naoki would find herself jerked from the floor without warning and sent flying at a slightly upward angle into the wall behind her. The force of her armor’s collision with the wall was enough to send dust falling from the ceiling and knock the wind out of The Empress. Was it enough? It had to be enough godsdamnit!

The Empress has scarce little time to do anything but exclaim in surprise. The defenses, the tiles she pressed, why aren’t they working?
Then The Empress is flung backward as a result of whatever foul hex Greed cast. Up, over the top of the throne, all the way back into the window behind her, which has so wonderfully silhouetted her and provided light by which to work. Despite all the best intentions, heavily reinforcing that window works against Naoki in this case, as she hurtles toward it at some speed. The metal of her armor doesn’t impact the glass, but The Empress’s unarmored head produces a dull thud as it impacts the glass. She then falls to the ground, unconscious.
Once the power source recovers from its disruption at the hand of the gem, the defenses activate — though far too late.
There’s a low rumbling from the ceiling as the stonework begins to move. On all the pillars up and down both sides of the office, the uppermost bulges upon which the ceiling arches rest rotate, revealing square holes about as large as one’s fist. The crystal within each one begins to glow red. Though wholly unrelated to The Empress’s gem, they produce a similar effect.
Each one pivots to point at the nearest intruder and casts upon them a bright ray of hot, magical, and generally quite harmful energy. Individually they’re not lethal, but there are some 30+ in all and they’re very accurate. Armor and other protections serve to mitigate the damage but they’re growing hotter by the second. The designer’s and The Empress’s intent in activating them is to blind and suppress, and to put a time limit on how long any intruder could remain in The Office. Perhaps they will serve to level the balance to The Set’s detriment.

The effects of the beams were potent and against intruders less suited to dealing with such things they would likely have proven sufficient to tip the balance in her guard's favour. But The Set wore magically resistant armour in addition to having magical resistance wards carved into their very bodies. On top of that, the smooth masks they wore provided eye protection from the light.
Which is to not say that the beams are without effect. Lust certainly felt the discomfort that was growing with each passing moment but he was trained to ignore such things. He also starts to impose the palace guards themselves between himself and the beams as he whirls into them a spinning dervish of death. The guards finding their wits slowed as the man's pheromones, his power, spread out into their midst.
Ultimately, the beams would be enough to ensure a victory over Lust... but only Lust. If Greed joined the fray they had little hope of winning the question was, would Greed be able to? Would the High Marshal keep the duelist busy?

Post by Alden Marshal on Jul 9, 2020 7:45:24 GMT -8
Pride's threat hangs in the air for Alden as he looks to the Empress seeking an answer. But none is given as before Naoki can tell him what to do she is struck down by Greed. The High Marshal watches as his friend slams into the wall and slumps down unconscious and time seems to slow for him as he considers what to do next. Leaving Naoki now did not sit right with him, she was injured but he also knew that she was not going to be killed any time soon. There was still hope that he could track her down and rescue her if she was taken. But his children?
He had no doubt in his mind that if his children were taken then there was no chance he would find them. Naoki was going to be taken to some other party besides Pride but his children would be taken to the Lich. The threat that Pride represented loomed large in his mind, a sword of Damocles that would have caused him fear if he was capable of it, perhaps he was with the way the worry wriggled into his mind like a worm.
He had no choice. He knew what he had done in his childhood, even if all of Isra fell he could not risk his children going through the same. The High Marshal turns on his heels and sprints out of the citadel. Hoping beyond hope that he would be able to find Naoki before she was beyond help.

The tides could have been turned on them, but it seemed Alden had grown soft in his time here in Isra… This was in Pride’s plan, but even so, Greed had held the slightest of doubts that their former compatriot would be swayed by threats against “loved ones”. Now that the threat of Alden wasn’t hanging over his head, Greed was able to spring into action with his full attention turned on the enemies before him.
The crystals in the ceiling would be problematic should they be allowed to continue their assault… Whipping out several knives in rapid succession, he hurled them towards several of the crystals in the ceiling. Had they simply been thrown they likely wouldn’t be enough to break them, but given the extra push of his power, they hurtled towards their targets with a great deal of force.
Gritting his teeth as the remaining crystals lasers bore down upon him, Greed did what he could to offer assistance to Lust. Raising his hand towards a clump of guards, he let his power swell, unleashing it in a blast upon them. The five or so guards would find themselves launched back and sent thudding into the wall behind them. Greed himself was sent skidding backward several feet, only his training ensuring he kept his footing.

Without the benefit of the high marshal, the palace guards were simply overwhelmed. It wasn't long before they were either unconscious or dead, the defensive lasers shattered, and the room secured by the two members of the set. Lust pants heavily, he'd not come out unscratched. A chunk of his armour was smoking and he had a sizable wound in his side that was bleeding heavily. Though it was already starting to close on its own.
"No telling what she has on her."
He says looking over at Greed.
"Strip her now? Or wait? I think its better if we eliminate the chance of her having something later."
Once they settle on that, they tie the empress up and Greed has the honour of slinging her over his shoulder as they head out.

Physical Description: =========================
Empress Naoki is a curvaceous woman of average height, indeterminate age, and catlike features. Her hair is a dark auburn, often pulled back into a long braid. Her ears are both soft and fluffy, and her tail is never less than perfectly groomed. Amber eyes glisten in the shadows cast by her hair.
Clothes and Equipment: =========================
Naoki's wardrobe is to her as a frame is to a painting. Sometimes embellished with detail to be attractive in its own right, but never the focus. Usually simple but elegant, tightly fitting and highly revealing, used only to frame the beauty within.
Additionally, Naoki is, when clothed, often adorned with a small collection of accessories. She wears an earring, a brilliant cut amethyst, in her right ear. The silver signet ring of Isra is worn on her left pinky, marking her as High Lady of Isra. Directly adjacent, she wears the golden signet ring of The Isran Empire as its Empress. On the inside of her left thigh, there is a tattoo depicting a rose entwined with tentacles.

Naoki is unconscious and thus unable to do anything at all. Her mouth hangs open just a bit but she maintains enough decorum not to drool even in her stupor.

Wiping sweat from his brow and allowing a grimace to crease his mouth, Greed glances at Naoki’s rather ornate armor. It looked like it’d be a pain in the ass to remove, which normally wouldn’t have bothered him, but given their current circumstances…
“We’ll get her out of it once we reach our rendezvous point. Right now we need to get out of the Citadel as fast as we can. We can’t afford to get swarmed by guards, or worse, one of her elite units. I have something that’ll keep her out for a while anyway.”
Whipping a small vial from his coat pocket, Greed pried Naoki’s jaw open and poured the liquid down her throat. After checking to make sure she has properly swallowed it and wasn’t choking to death, he tied her up and swung her over one shoulder. With that potion in her system, they needn’t worry about her waking up for at least several more hours.
“I suppose we should grab something to obscure who we’re carrying… I know just the thing.”
Snatching an Isran banner that was mounted on a nearby wall, Pride wrapped up the Empress in it. It was loose enough around her head he didn’t have to worry about it suffocating her, but it’d help prevent any guards from noticing who exactly they were carrying. And given the screams emanating from the courtyard, he wasn’t particularly worried about having to deal with any particularly thorough inspections.
Motioning for Lust to follow, Greed takes off for where they climbed up the walls at. He had every intention of repelling down the wall with the Empress at the same place. And once they were out of this blasted citadel, the rest should be comparatively easy.
