"Alone we are nothing." - The House of Winter's motto
House Winter's existence is a relatively new discovery within the Overworld. Originally only in control of a small village in the heart of the region known as the Winterlands, this family has risen to great power with the aid of Isra.
The Noble House of Winter has a history of grand actions to support the greater good even before themselves. Once a house of a great nation now gone to ruin, they kept this trend of honor and upstanding actions until they were removed from power and exiled through a devious plot making them out as traitors and kingslayers. Those were the times of the cataclysm, and that is all that is known of House Winter in the time before.
They survived, however, their few bannermen and family members fleeing to a forest and taking up home in a keep that lay ruined and overgrown within the safety of the ancient oaks and lumbering pines. For many years this was home for them. The House of Winter carved out a living from the land. Back then the Winterlands weren't as cold inhospitable, but mild and warm. Food was abundant and their numbers grew to the hundreds. The original family was all but ready to take their forest home and claim itself as a kingdom when tragedy struck. A tragedy that House Winter never fully recovered from.
The legend says, "A great mage of the Lords of the Forest discovered a secret, deep in the woods of his lieges. A grand tree to be protected at all cost, a tree of such immense value that even a dragon lay in its roots. The foolish man was deceived by the allure of power, and falsely befriended the great beast of the tree in the hope that he could have it for himself. He took its power but at an exceptional cost. His mind was frozen and shattered as he became the winds of winter, the blizzard of the mountain, the cold itself. The mighty dragon, betrayed, tried to slay the man and take back the power he stole. So mighty was the sorcerer now that he defeated the dragon with pitiful ease, but stayed his hand from the final blow, out of loyalty and apology to his old friend. The mage began to bring winter to the forest, first a breeze, then a frost, then a snow, then a cold so deep it was as if Death himself had come to take those within. Defeated, the great dragon took the form of an elf and approached the Lords of the Forest and spoke unto them 'Your despicable, traitorous mage has stolen powers not meant for man. I will teach you how to stop souls lost like him if you join me in putting the monster to grass' And so the great dragon taught the Lords of the Forest and their people how to stop the flow of magic and turn it on its caster. Soon the Lords of the Forest marched upon the Winterstorm's lair and a grand battle erupted. Many of the Lord of the Forest were slain and all seemed lost. The great dragon took to the field with a heavy heart, disappointed in her old friend, and her might turned the tide. She summoned great chains of fire from the earth that clamped around the exhausted mage. The remaining and now wearied Lords of the Forest slew the husk of a man seven times over, but he never died. The great dragon made chains that would last forever, and bound the traitorous mage with them, and the Lords of the Forest created a temple around him that could never die. The great battle wrought a lasting effect on the forest; winter reigned for many years. The Lords of the Forest suffered, and many died. Those that survived took a new name; the Lords of Winter."
Little is known of its truth, the legend is told to this day. They say this is why the Winterlands are cool, why the Winterlanders have the ability to cancel and even destroy magic. Whether the legend is true or not, a seven-year winter gripped the forest and the House of Winter suffered with their people. Hundreds died over those years; of sickness and starvation. Worse things were born from the cold. A race of wolf-men starving and cold would begin to prey upon the people of House Winter. A force of men was cobbled together and the Lords of Winter would stand and fight the beasts. Soon they used flags depictions of wolves and wear cloaks lined with their fur to show defiance against the beasts. Many people who lived outside their forests were attacked as well and joined House Winter to keep their families safe. Ever since House Winter has been known by their banners and many saw them and a defender of the people. Eventually, these cold years passed, but war with the wolf-men continued until recent events saw a peace made and the wolves joining House Winter.
With men rising in number, people who wanted what was yours became common and seeking protection in the forest was a common strategy. However, the Lords of Winter responded with force, killing bandits without mercy to protect themselves. House Winter was stricken with tragedy many times, gangs trying to take their village for their own. One such raid ended with the death of Crovan's father.
All in all House Winter is a Noble family who has strived despite struggles and did what was best for their people, fighting monsters, stopping mad wizards, putting down bandits in their lands, or allying themselves with a mighty nation. They carry themselves with pride for surviving struggles and protecting themselves, they act with honor for the benefit of their people.
