The Town of LuxThe town of Lux is a small, well-kept town at the foot of the towering Mount Grim. It is ruled by the High Priest of Light, and all the citizens are avid followers of his teachings. The people of the town are all very religious and can be rather xenophobic at times, although the innkeepers and tavern owners are usually friendly enough to outsiders. One odd custom of the town is the monthly "Affirmation of Faith" where every citizen pledges their allegiance to The Light. The town is known for its ornate chandeliers and its hot beef pies.

Physical Description: Approximately 6’7 in height with a somewhat gangly build. His body is covered completely by surprisingly flexible armor plates that overlay a skin fitting cloth outfit. Over the armor, he wears a voluminous black cloak that features a rather sizable collar that is usually turned up. His mask has a beaklike metal extension on the front of it with two metal hoses attached to directly below the beak-like extension. These hoses connect to the armor on his back, making them mostly obscured by the cloak he wears. On top of the mask, he wears a plain black top hat that’s in surprisingly good shape. His eyes are obscured by a dark tinted glass.
---------------------------------------------------------
Clothes and Equipment: A flexible suit of armor made from enchanted alloy. Despite being in relatively thin sheets, it’s highly durable and resistant to a wide manner of attacks. The cloth it's attached to and the cloak that covers it also appears to have been enchanted in some ways. Wears gloves of a similar material that have what appears to be runes of some kind written on them. A rather strange looking crossbow that’s unusually large is strapped to his back along with a glaive. There appear to be many objects carried in the coat's pockets, although they are obscured from view. In addition to this, Balthazar carries a worn looking travelers bag.

The sun had set, the moon just now beginning to show itself. Perhaps those in the Town of Lux were preparing for bed or having their dinner. If any happened to be outside, however, they might see a faint silhouette out in the distance. At first, it would be impossible to make out, but eventually, a monstrous black horse came into view. It was a good foot or two taller than your average stallion, both coat and mane a pure black.
As it reached the entrance to the town, the horse slowed its pace from a gallop to an almost lazy trot. The rider of the animal appeared to be surveying the town, although due to the mask he was wearing, it was difficult to discern what his gaze was looking at exactly. Anyone who might be nearby the horse and it’s rather eccentric looking rider might get the feeling something wasn’t quite natural about the animal, although pinning down what exactly was wrong with it aside from its size wouldn’t be quite as easy.
The pair made their way through the town, the horse finally pulling up to a stop in front of the tavern, letting out a huff as it halted before the door to the building. A creaking of leather and metal could be heard as Balthazar climbed down from his mount. Leaning forward, he spoke some muffled words into the horse's ear before turning and making his way into the tavern. His footsteps fell heavily on the floor of the tavern as he entered, his head swiveling back and forth as if in search of someone.

The streets of Lux were empty, which was rather strange for a town of this size. When Bathlazar stepped into the tavern, the townsfolk glanced over, then quickly looked away. One patron after another bowed their heads, and murmured prayers would be heard throughout the tavern. None of the customers would look Bathlazar in the eye, and they muttered quietly about "those who walk in darkness" and "glory to the light". Even the waitresses averted their eyes from him, staring instead at the ground or at the ornate chandelier hanging in the center of the room. It seemed to be made of hundreds of shards of pure glass, magnifying the light of a ring of candles that hung in the center. The tavern keeper was the only one who looked up at Bathlazar, smiling broadly.
"Welcome, newcomer! Can I help you with anything? "

Balthazar made no comments on the behavior of the general tavern in reaction to their muttering, his gaze turning from them to the tavern keeper as the man spoke to him. The mask obscured whatever expression he might be giving the man. Approaching the tavern keeper at a slow walk, metal studded boots thumping at a rhythmic pace. Placing his worn travel bag on the bar counter, Balthazar finally responded to the friendly tavern keeper.
“I’m not yet sure, but hopefully you’ll be able to. For starters, I’d like something strong to drink. It also seems I’ve run across a ritual of sorts happening here. I take it this is a town of the religious sort?””
His voice was surprisingly smooth sounding compared to what one might expect based on his appearance, although the mask caused it to be muffled. Even up close, the tavern keeper wouldn’t be able to make out Balthazar’s actual eyes, the tinted glass of the mask blocking a proper view of them.

The tavern keeper nodded, chuckling softly to himself. "The religious sort" was quite an understatement. It was like saying that the oceans were "rather damp" or that red-hot iron was "somewhat warm".
"Oh yes, this is definitely the religious sort of town. We follow the teachings of the Church of Light, which has kept us safe and moral for as long as this town has been here. Glory to the light. As for that drink, I've got that right here."
He poured Balthazar a glass of brandy in a rather odd mug. It was completely opaque, made of some sort of blackened glass, and had a lid covering the top.
"Here you go, sir. The mug is just one of our customs. Thou shalt not defile the light, sordid and profane acts shall remain in darkness. Third tenent of the Light. We serve alcohol in covered mugs, as to not defile the light that shines upon it."

The town seemed a bit cultish in Balthazar’s opinion, but he doubted such a sentiment would be appreciated. Instead, he simply nodded in acknowledgment of the tavern keeper’s words. They certainly had some rather bizarre customs, covering up the alcohol they drank so it wouldn’t defile the light? How quaint.
“I haven’t ever heard of this Church of Light before coming to this town… I assume only those in this town hold these beliefs. Is the founder of this religion a town resident perhaps?”
Reaching out with a gloved hand, Balthazar takes the mug of brandy, opening the lid on top of it. Reaching under the beak-like extension of his mask, he pulls down a thin hollow metal tube, placing it in the drink. In a matter of seconds, all the brandy in the mug is drained, the alchemist letting out what sounds to be a satisfied sigh as he places the empty mug back down on the bar.
“Are the people of this town normally so easily frightened by strangers, or is it simply my appearance?”

While Balthazar was conversing with the tavernkeeper, a young woman in a cloak walked into the tavern as discreetly as possible. She kept her head covered and meandered over to an empty table. She sat down and pulled out a pouch of gold along with a pencil and pad of paper. While counting the gold, she would write down numbers every once in a while.

The town was full of odd customs, as he would surely soon find out. For now, though, the covered mug was the extent of the strangeness. The tavern keeper watched with interest as the masked man drained the mug through a tube, and quietly replaced the lid before taking the mug and passing it to a dish washer to be cleaned. "The Church of Light is fairly small, but devout. We're mostly in this town for now, although missionaries do head out every now and then. The founder of the Church of Light is no longer with us, but this town is central to the faith. Lux was the first settlement that the Light fell upon, when it was brought by Lumen, our savior. He climbed to the top of Mount Grim to bring the Light from the heavens. Glory to the Light." He gestured out the window to the imposing mountain that towered over the town. "And the people here aren't used to seeing strangers, much less ones dressed like you."

As discreet as she tried to be, Kelly would attract quite a bit of attention. For some reason, everyone spotted her right away and people stared. It would take a few moments, but she would soon realize why people noticed her so quickly: none of them wore hoods! In any other tavern, a decent portion of the patrons would be wearing hooded cloaks or otherwise covering their faces. However, not a single customer in the tavern (with the exception of the towering armored man at the bar) had so much as a bonnet over their heads, meaning that the sneaky Kelly stuck out like a sore thumb. The patrons whispered among themselves, and Kelly would hear bits and pieces of their conversation. She walks in the darkness. She hides from the Light.

Eventually Kelly would look up from her notes, wondering where the waitress was, noticing people staring at her. She stopped writing and froze, eyes darting between the stares. Eventually she spoke up.
"....What?" She asked simply to anyone willing to answer.

The townsfolk merely looked away when Kelly spoke up, resuming their meals and drinks. They certainly were a rather odd bunch. Eventually, a rather nervous-looking waitress approached Kelly, murmuring some kind of prayer as she walked up. When she finally spoke, her voice was shaky and worried.
"Um...Hello, ma'am. Can I get you anything to eat or drink tonight? Also, would you mind taking your hood off? It's...it's our custom here not to wear hoods or cover our faces unless it's very wet or cold outside. You're making people nervous."

Balthazar glanced over as Kelly entered the tavern, noticing that the other townsfolk had a similar reaction to her as they had to him when he had entered. It seemed it wasn’t entirely his physical appearance that had caused a commotion so much as the fact he was a stranger. Unlike the townsfolk, however, Balthazar’s gaze didn’t rest on Kelly long and he turned back to the tavern keeper.
The mention of the mountain caused Balthazar to gaze out the window, staring at it in silence for some time. Perhaps there was something of interest on the mountain. He had nothing to base this feeling off of, but he occasionally got hunches like this one.
“I see, so you’re a budding religion so to speak… If I was interested in hearing more about the beliefs your Church of Light holds, would I simply visit this town’s church?”
Although he didn’t turn his attention to Kelly, he was listening to the question she had directed to the townsfolk. He was rather curious to hear how they would respond to it.

"Nervous? I'm not causing trouble, just looking for a place to rest on my way through." Kelly said as she removed her hood. "And yeah, you got any root beer? What about curry? Been in the mood for something spicy since I got into town."

The waitress let out a sigh of satisfaction, visibly relieved when Kelly removed her hood. The townsfolk seemed to notice as well, and the whispering died down a bit.
"Yes, well we're all a bit nervous of those who don't let the Light shine on their faces. Nothing good comes from dwelling in the darkness, you know? Glory to the Light."
When Kelly made her order, the waitress frowned, confused. What was this woman asking for? Foreigners sure ate strange foods.
"Um...we have regular beer. It's made from grains, not roots. And we don't have any curry...although if you want something spicy, I'm sure the chef can fix you up a pepper roast. Will that be fine?"

"Uh...water with pepper roast then. Not much for alcohol. And what the hell is 'The Light'? The sun just set. Plus, I'm not so good in the sun. I burn easy. Kind of comes with the territory of being a ginger, you know?"

The waitress gasped when Kelly asked what the Light was, as though she couldn't possibly imagine not knowing.
"Why, the Light watches over us! It illuminates us and shields us from the darkness. It shall not be defiled. Those who dwell in the darkness must be turned to the light, else they walk in dark forever. You should let it shine on you, and bask in its glory! I'll have your meal right away."
She bustled off, leaving Kelly alone.

If you're interested in hearing more, just head to the church tomorrow for a sermon, or go talk to the Head Priest. I'm sure he'd be happy to illuminate you." The mountain loomed ominously, dark and imposing. It seemed as though Mount Grim was aptly named. Meanwhile, the surrounding townsfolk glanced over at Balthazar and whispered some more. Why was this newcomer so curious about their religion?

“I see… Thank you for the information, you’ve been most enlightening. For now, I shall be taking my leave.”
Reaching into his old travel bag, Balthazar pulled out a few coins, placing them on the bar as payment. The tavern keeper would find the amount to be a bit more than the drink cost, the man could consider it a token of thanks in return for the info he had given Balthazar.
Closing the bag back up, Balthazar turned and headed towards the door. Each step he took made a heavy sounding thump on the floor below. It seemed he didn’t care what the townsfolk’s opinion of him was, for he made no comment at the whispers they directed towards him. Stopping right as he reached the door, his head swiveled, his gaze resting on Kelly. The moment didn’t last long, Balthazar opening the tavern door and exiting without another word.
The alchemist's horse, Ebony, was right where he’d left him. Climbing up on top of the animal, Balthazar flicked the reins, causing the horse to start off at a trot towards Mount Grim. He intended to follow through on his hunch and see if there more to the mountain than might meet the eye.

Although she had heard religious gibberish before, this was by far the most profound. Kelly herself didn't care about gods since they clearly didn't care about her, thus to hear something as simple as "the light" being a deity amused her. When the woman left, Kelly scoffed and shook her head. "Nutjobs..." She muttered to herself before going back to counting gold.

The tired elven Ranger breathed a sigh of relief as he caught sight of what could only be a town on the horizon. This life was often lonely, and several supplies that he could not obtain from nature would hopefully be able to be obtained in the town.
His horse wearily made its way to the town gate, where Feanor called out."Hullo there! Anybody about to let a road-weary Ranger in?"
