"Why this town specifically?" She asked, leaning in a bit, "Your messiah was trying to save all of humanity, not just this specific place from what you've told me."

The head priest leaned in as well, mimicking Kelly's posture.
"Why, Lux was the first settlement that the Light fell on! We were under the foot of Mount Grim, after all. Lumen was from here, also. It's just a very illuminated place. Besides, every child here is born to parents who follow the teachings of the Light very closely. It's taught to them at a very young age, before they can even walk. Everybody in this town is brightly illuminated, and carries with them the blessing of the Light."

"Yes, you've mentioned that already....they don't seem too friendly with outsiders though. Me wearing a cloak was enough to get stares."
She looked to the group, raising her voice so they could hear.
"Show of hands, who here has left this village and visited another settlement?"

The high priest sighed.
"Yes, I'm terribly sorry about that. We don't get very many visitors, and it's our custom to let the Light fall on your face whenever possible. We usually don't wear hoods, as I'm sure you've now heard. Those who reject the blessing of the Light shall walk forever in darkness, you know."
When she asked who had visited other towns, three people raised their hands hesitantly. The others merely shook their heads, looking appalled at the very notion.

"You don't even give them a chance to redeem themselves?"

The head priest chuckled.
"Of course we do, we're not some kind of cult, are we? No no, we give people chances. We're giving you one right now, aren't we? You walked in with a hood, because you didn't know the gift of Light. We spread the blessing around, and we don't turn away people willing to learn. It's just that we don't get many visitors around here, so people are unused to seeing those who have not yet received the blessing of Light."

Kelly acknowledged the ones who sheepishly raised their hands, noting their hesitation to do so.
"Well, to the outsider it seems less not used to me and more distrust. Oddly enough I'm used to that feeling, but I imagine anyone else passing through would be less likely to come into the light if its followers don't seem to like those in darkness." She said, looking around at the group before turning back to the priest. She leaned back in her seat.
"But that's just unnecessary hostility from me. This Light, is it physical? You claim you can tell who has the blessing of the light in them. Is it something you can see? Is it a literal lightsource?"

The priest glanced over to see who raised their hands, then turned back to Kelly.
"I can see where you're coming from, but we're just unused to visitors. Some do not trust those who have not been touched by the Light, but I prefer to teach a more understanding philosophy. Teach and expand the Light, rather than hoarding it and keeping it close. It's not a physical thing, and takes years of training before you can even begin to detect the Light. I can see the Light in people only because I was raised and taught to do so my entire life."

"Are you the only one currently trained to do that? Or are there other clergy in town capable of such a feat?"

Lucian shook his head.
"Oh no, there aren't any others. I was the only one trained from such a young age, after all. All the others joined when they were older and decided on their own to devote their lives to teaching the Light."
Realizing that he'd been standing for a while, the High Priest pulled up a chair and sat down at the table across from Kelly. The kitten curled up and fell asleep on the table, producing a soothing purr.

Kelly petted the kitten as it slept, smiling to herself.
"Are there other morals? So far I know of three- be good to animals, be good to humans, and screw anyone who doesn't think that way."

Lucian nodded, chuckling at Kelly's interpretation of his teachings. Outsiders sure could be funny sometimes. It really was a shame that they didn't get very many.
"It's a bit more subtle than that, Kelly. But to answer your question, yes. There are some more. A big one is that the Light shall not be defiled. I mentioned this earlier, but the Light should not be allowed to fall on any sordid acts or activities in order to keep it pure. We also try to allow the Light to fall on us whenever possible, as I'm sure you're well aware by now. And we reaffirm our faith every month. Tomorrow is the day of reaffirmation this month, in fact."

Lucian chuckled.
"I can tell what you're thinking, Kelly. We're not some mad cult. We don't demand monthly blood sacrifices or firstborns or anything like that. It's very simple, really. Everybody just goes to the temple and pledges their faith to the Light. Then we make sure all the animals are well-treated and all the elderly or ill are being taken care of. It's quite a touching process, really. Really nice to see the whole town come together like that."

"You keep saying mad cult....and that's just it, you keep saying it. I never once called you cultists. I'm just trying to understand your philosophy."
Kelly returned to petting the kitten.
"Going to be honest with you, I think something's screwy about this place. Your religion's backstory doesn't hold up and the xenophobic attitude people have eventually taken make me think at some point the love and peace speech broke down. Still...anyone who treats animals well can't be all bad. Plus, no one's attacking me, meaning they still have patience with someone who is, admittedly, less than credible. All I'm doing is inquiring into your religion. "

Balthazar the Alchemist
Established
Roleplay posts: 23
Age: 34
Physical Description: Approximately 6’7 in height with a somewhat gangly build. His body is covered completely by surprisingly flexible armor plates that overlay a skin fitting cloth outfit. Over the armor, he wears a voluminous black cloak that features a rather sizable collar that is usually turned up. His mask has a beaklike metal extension on the front of it with two metal hoses attached to directly below the beak-like extension. These hoses connect to the armor on his back, making them mostly obscured by the cloak he wears. On top of the mask, he wears a plain black top hat that’s in surprisingly good shape. His eyes are obscured by a dark tinted glass.
---------------------------------------------------------
Clothes and Equipment: A flexible suit of armor made from enchanted alloy. Despite being in relatively thin sheets, it’s highly durable and resistant to a wide manner of attacks. The cloth it's attached to and the cloak that covers it also appears to have been enchanted in some ways. Wears gloves of a similar material that have what appears to be runes of some kind written on them. A rather strange looking crossbow that’s unusually large is strapped to his back along with a glaive. There appear to be many objects carried in the coat's pockets, although they are obscured from view. In addition to this, Balthazar carries a worn looking travelers bag.

If the locals of Lux had hoped that Balthazar’s departure the previous night was the last time they would have to see the strangely dressed man, they would find themselves sadly mistaken. The alchemist rode into the town yet again, this time arriving early in the morning and from the path that leads to Mount Grim. The tavern keeper had mentioned there would be a sermon this morning and the alchemist intended to attend it. Pulling Ebony up to a stop across from the church, Balthazar climbed down from the horse rather stiffly, sleeping outside did have its downsides after all. For now, he would simply wait until people began gathering for the sermon, he was quite curious what the priest of this town had to say...

Lucian sighed, and took another sip of his milk.
"I'm terribly sorry, Kelly. You're right, you've never once said it. It's just that the last visitor we got kept saying it, and it became awfully tiring after a while. I apologize for putting words in your mouth. The backstory holds true, though. It may have been stylized over the years, as have all religion's backstories, but the essence is true. If you'd stay a while in the town, I'm sure you'll see that the love and peace is going strong. It's just difficult to get over the initial shock of seeing someone new after so long. Anyways, I'm delighted about your inquiries. It's not often that I get to teach a newcomer about the Light, except when new children are born. And we really do treat animals nicely."
The kitten stirred under Kelly's pets, looking up and batting at her hand.

"Do people in the town get mistreated if they don't follow the light?" She asked, not noticing Balthazar.

As he came through the woods he saw the light of a village.
"Ahh." Hope said aloud. "This place may have many new opportunities to use my craft."
He walked into the pub and was greeted by the stares and hushed whispers of the townspeople who are seeing yet another stranger come into their town. He too wore a hood, except it was a dark green leathered hooded garment.
He walked up to the bar stool, sat and waited for the barmaid to notice him.

Lucian shook his head, chuckling softly. "Oh no, dear Kelly. We don't mistreat anybody here! Every citizen of Lux is treated fairly. Besides, everyone follows the Light. They're born into it, and recognize its blessing for what it is. But no, nonbelievers aren't mistreated. Look at you! Once we got over the initial shock, you're being treated very nicely." The kitten got up and walked over to Lucian, who picked it up and set it on his shoulder like a parrot. It meowed, rubbing its head against his face. All of a sudden, another hooded stranger stepped through the door. The townsfolk stared at Hope "Not an Assassin" as he walked in. How had so many visitors appeared all of a sudden? Lucian smiled at him, turning away from Kelly for a moment. "Ah, welcome traveler! Welcome to Lux, please have a seat! If you'd be so kind as to remove your hood, we'd all appreciate it. Let the Light fall on your face and receive its blessing."
