Ami returned the salute, with a much more casual air, but not an unprofessional one. She watched the door for a moment after he left, then took up her whittling again. Something to fill the time and keep her hands and mind occupied during the long shift at the desk.
Down the hall, he found that the indicated door stood open, perhaps inviting people to come by. The decor of the waiting area might reinforce that impression, with comfortable chairs, a few plants here and there, and friendly, light blue paint on the walls.
The welcoming air ended entirely at the face of the man sitting at the desk inside, though. He had the polite, but dour expression of a butler to a wealthy family told to scoop up the mess a visitor’s dog had left on the carpet. “Can I help you?”

One would think that the tall fellow, some inches over six feet in height, would be intimidating. The scars on his face, the blinded left eye, the battered full plate armor and beaten shield. He has a warrior's physique, though he does not have the hulking mass one would attribute to paragons of battle.
The gentle smile wipes any doubts away.
Thalric moves with militant readiness, those habits deep in his bones. His coal black hair and sky blue eye mark his as a commoner, though he has long since lost the lower-class accent to something middling, bridging the gap between merchant elite and nobility.

"I hope so, sir. Guardsman Ami sent me this way. Told me to pass this to you," he replied, making his way towards the desk, holding out the paper. "Potential recruit."
He would wait patiently, his militant posture returning as he stood at ease.

The man hardly seemed pleased by the explanation. He took the paper without looking and pointed to the nearby chairs. “Well. Sit down there, and someone will be with you shortly.”
After a few minutes, the assistant finished with the paperwork that had been interrupted by Thalric’s arrival and looked over at the paper he had brought in with him. He started slightly, then looked across to Thalric. Then down at the paper. Then to Thalric again.
He jumped up and walked into the captain’s office without knocking. After a short muffled conversation, the assistant came out again and gestured to the door. “The captain will see you now.”

"Yessir," Thalric answered, offering an apologetic smile before taking the mentioned seat. When he noticed the man returning to his paperwork, the paladin instead turned his attention to the room and the effort to make it more comfortable, looking at the details as though to paint himself a picture or to piece together answers, however inaccurate they might be.
When the man started and looked back at Thalric a second time, the paladin noticed and gave the fellow an inquisitive look. But, he was quickly gone thereafter, leaving Thalric alone with more than a few curious questions.
"Thank you, sir," Thalric answered when he was admitted to see the captain, easing his way into the captain's room and maintaining his usual discipline as he did so.

Through the door was a smaller office, not as ostentatious as some men in his position might have demanded, but neither as spartan as many career soldiers would choose. Instead, it was more or less the same as the room outside, with pleasant blue paint, comfortable chairs, and a few plants. In addition, a few landscape paintings hung on the walls.
The large desk, on the other hand, was a riot of documents and scrolls and letters that appeared as if there was an attempt at sorting and organization that simply could not keep up with the volume. The man behind it, apparently the captain, was already on his feet when Thalric entered.
“Hello, Mister Thalric. We were expecting you to come by today. I apologize for the wait. I told Dorn to let me know when you arrived, but apparently he was in the middle of something that could not wait.” *He glanced out the door with a less-than-pleased expression, then turned back to Thalric again. “Do have a seat. I’m Captain Vargo. You are here to discuss joining the watch, I understand?”

"I understand completely if the matters of the city and the guard are more pressing than the arrival of a stranger, sir," Thalric replied in truth, understanding the man's position and not begrudging him or his man outside. In fact, Thlaric looked to the papers and waved to the riot of papers on the desk. "You've your work cut out enough for you, it seems."
The paladin took a few steps forward to close the gap and to speak more amiably, before taking a seat before the captain. "Yes, sir. Lady Rashmi and I met by chance, yesterday, and she spoke of the city and the help the watch might need. I think I can be of service, if given the chance. Though I do not expect exceptions to be given to a stranger fresh from a ship."

“Fresh off the boat, and already met Lady Rashmi? It seems fortune smiles on us, as they say.” He nodded and shuffled through some papers, then picked up a letter with a broken seal of blue wax. “The last time I spoke with her, I mentioned that we could use more officers. The city is growing, after all…”
The captain looked down at the letter and read “I recall that you mentioned a need for more experienced help in the ranks. I am sending you a man that I think will do for your purposes. Expect Mister Thalric at your office tomorrow.” Vargo looked across to the paladin, dropping the letter onto his desk again.
“That is the relevant part, anyway. Say what you will about her, but Lady Rashmi is a keen judge of character. She was a way of… seeing more than just appearances. She expects to see you in the uniform sooner or later, and if that doesn’t happen, I will be the one explaining to her why. That is a double-edged sword, Mister Thalric.”
He leaned forward in his chair, fixing Thalric with a stern look. “It means you start accepted in unless you give us a reason to say no. But it also means that you’re going to be held to a high standard about it. If I have to give a report about you, it will be a thorough one. So I will be watching. Closely.”
Leaning back in his chair again, Vargo relaxed somewhat. “ That isn’t a threat. It’s just laying out the facts so we all know where we stand. If that doesn’t bother you, then we can get on with the process, and you’ll be assigned to a training squad in the next few days, assuming nothing comes up to say you shouldn’t be. If it does, then we can tell the lady that after discussing it, the life of a watchman wasn’t for you, and we both go on our way, no hard feelings.”

"Seems my own Lady has guided me where I am needed once more, sir," Thalric answered with a smile, though it faded as the man spoke and was replaced with an equally stern mask. He nodded. "I'd expect nothing less, Captain. You have your duties and responsibilities, and would much prefer such honesty in my ability and capacity among you. I could not improve or learn otherwise. When nearing your fourth decade, sir, we do not have the same patience to dance around what could be spoken plainly as when we were younger."
The paladin smirked once more. "The only thing that has me hesitate is my lack of knowledge or experience with the city and to be given a command. I can train guards in combat, working as a unit, how to deal with citizens and strangers alike. I can do my best to learn the city and her laws, but so long as you understand my inexperience with the city and correct me quickly, I would go where you think I am needed and trust your judgement, sir."

The rest of the interview went more or less as expected. Captain Vargo questioned Thalric Dale, Paladin about his experience, his past, and his outlook s it might pertain the job at some length. He was thorough and detailed, but always in a way that came off as polite and professional rather than abrasive or harsh. Overall, the captain was a man that took his job seriously, and he took the recommendation of the woman that paid his wages somewhat less seriously than that. He made it clear that he expected the city watch to be shining examples of civic virtue and upstanding members of the community they were protecting. He also expected them to break skulls in the name of peace and justice, if needed, contradictory as that might seem. Lhesa’s light-touch and low-detail laws attracted more than a few that were trying to avoid the tighter restrictions of other places, and some of them were criminals at heart intending to take advantage. The job of seeing that the city was a haven of freedom rather than a hive of wickedness fell to the watch. Most of his coworkers were former adventurers that had decided steady, reliable pay was the better bet than treasure-hunting, or had simply decided this was as good a place as any to settle and make a home, and chose the job closest to what they knew. They knew the city well enough, and had connections with the people from that shared history. But few had any real experience in law-enforcement before signing up. Given all that, it seemed that Thalric and the people he would be working with were going to be training each other. At the end of the interview, Vargo stood up to shake Thalric’s hand. “Welcome to the watch, then. Probationary, in-training, so on and so forth, but I think you’ll be a good fit here. We’ll see about getting you set up in the next few days and out on patrol once you’re ready.”

And the paladin remained as open as he had been about his past, his faith and his experiences. He voiced his concerns, made his observations of the Captain and what little he'd seen of the watch and agreed; peace was something you sometimes had to fight for, you just had to know how to fight that sort of battle.
But they stood up at last, the interview winding down and hands clasped with a firm shake. The captain seemed to have earned Thalric's respect, for the time being. "I'll do my best not to let any of you down then, sir. I'll speak with your man out front on where a runner or word can be sent to me for now. I'll report to the watch house for briefings and training bright and early otherwise. Thank you for your time, Captain."
And with one last salute, the paladin was already marching his way out the captain's door, a new member of the watch.
