Valland Countryside
For those seeking random events, you may post here!
Considered 'safe' by Varan standards, the Valland countryside can be quite dangerous to newcomers. There are many forests, hilly valleys, rivers, lakes, and creeks to be found all over the hold, with many abandoned and ruined settlements and castles; there are plenty of dungeons to explore, and many great beasts to challenge. Likewise, a number of other adventures - though sparse - can be found roaming the countryside.

Roy walks through the wilderness, glancing about nervously. He still doesn't really know what a Jotun looks like, or where they live, and is worried that one will pop out of the ground or drop down from a tree. Holding a parasol over his head with one hand, he clings nervously to Vera with the other.
"Vera, have you ever gone Jotun hunting before? Do you know how it's done? I don't know how to hunt a Jotun..."
He looks worriedly at a gopher hole, afraid that a Jotun will jump out of it and eat him.

Grandma followed behind Roy and Vera as they made their way through the Valland Countryside. Although it wasn’t the nicest place she’d seen, it wasn’t one of the worst either. Grandma herself was constantly searching for any creatures or beast that might be watching them, an intent look on her face as she focus’d on this task.
Deciding to strike up a bit of conversation, Grandma would direct a question at her two companions.
“Say, do either of you know what might be out here besides just Jotun? I’m quite interested in creatures of all manner, so I’m hoping we’ll come across a variety.”
She asked the question in an almost offhand manner.

"Roy, I am pretty sure Jotun are ice giants. So they aren't going to jump out at you."
Vera pauses when Grandma asks her question. She digs her heel deep into the ground, sending out a pulse of magic. Taking stalk of all living things around them, that are currently touching the earth. It is standard fare: mice, gophers, worms, insects, a fox, raccoon, even a few wolves, the list goes on and on.
"There's a lot of wild life around. Sparse though, not uncommon this far north. Anything in particular you are hoping to see?"

The trio walk by a marshy pool of water. Glurp. Glurp. Glurp. The terrain is mostly hilly, with lots of trees, plenty of rivers and small lakes, and some jagged outcroppings. The cool blue sky is mostly covered by grey clouds; it may rain soon. The lack of sunlight coming through the clouds makes it feel colder than it should be, but then again, it's always cold in Asgeir.
Then, a long, drawn-out, cry erupts through the air. Swarms of birds flap loudly as they flee from their treetop perches. A few rocks shake and fumble down their slopes. The marshy pit beside the trio ripples from the sound. Something is coming.
Boosh! Boosh! Boosh! The deep, intimidating sounds of a running jotun! Within moments it comes into view up ahead, rounding the edge of a rocky retreat. He's tall, standing a good sixteen feet, with a barreled body and tree-branch arms; he's easily strong enough to smash any of the three adventurers into the ground. He wears a simple fur covering over his body, including his torso, arms, waist and legs. His skin is quite pale, and his grey beard and hair - both of which are quite long - speak of age.
"Graaahhh!" The mighty giant roars as the trespassers enters his domain. He pauses a good forty-feet from the trio and slows to pick up a moderately-sized boulder, probably big enough to kill Roy if it was to hit him, and chunks it at the group...

Roy sees the boulder coming and jumps out of the way, pulling Grandma and Vera out of the line of fire as well.
"Aah! A Jotun! What do we do, Vera? What do we do, Grandma?"
His eyes widen with panic as he realizes exactly what he was sent out to kill.
"Can't we talk about this? You really don't need all your toes, do you?"

Grandma appeared to contemplate her answer before responding to Vera.
“Well, mostly anything magical. I’m quite interested in magical creatures up in these parts, although a dragon or wyvern would also be quite a find, perhaps a bit much with this group though…”
At the Jotuns appearance, Grandma would put on her best impression of being awestruck by the creature. After Roy pulled her out of the way of the boulder, she would speak hurriedly to him and Vera.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure you two will be quite capable of handling that fellow over there! I’ll just wait behind this tree over here, don’t worry about me, I’ll be perfectly safe. You two just focus on bringing him down!”
At those words of ‘advice’, Grandma would shuffle away towards a nearby tree, standing behind it. Once she was out of her companions sight range, she would channel into her cane. The tip would let off a bit of a glow, but nothing too noticeable. Now she simply needed to stay within a few hundred feet of the Jotun as her two companions hopefully brought it down. Although not the most interesting thing, the soul of a Jotun would be better than nothing.
Glancing at her hand, she nodded in satisfaction to see all her rings were functional. Although she had no intention of helping them bring it down, she wasn’t so cold as to let her two companions die if they got into a bad spot.

Vera smiles as she is jerked out of the way. She likes when Roy proves she was right about him. Eyeing the Jotun she thinks of a plan, eventually she settles on that old adage: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. She was still channeling magic through the ground, so she is ready with a simple spell. The simplest spell in fact, the first thing a druid learns to ask the earth to do. She asks Mother Gaia, to move the earth in front of the Jotun. Not a lot of earth mind, just a hole big enough to catch the giants foot. The hole appears right where it needs to, right under the Jotun's right foot as it brings it down to the ground.

( Grandma Vera of the Celadine Royal Fletcher) "Grrr," gowls the mighty Jotun, until he is cut off. "Urf!" The giant's foot slips into a conveniently placed hole, courtesy of Vera, and falls down on his front side. If anything, the beast is angrier. "Raaah!" The mighty creature's muscles bulge, and he starts to look physically stronger. He pushes himself up and charges head-on for Vera and Roy, ignoring Grandma for the moment. On the way to the duo, he reaches over and lifts a heavy log, which he swings in a horizontal sweep as if to take out Vera and Roy's legs.

After a few hours of walking, Renner found what he thought would be a promising spot to wait for large beasts of the area. A large pool surrounded by marshy grass sat nestled between several standing stones. All beasts must drink; the marshy grass would serve to slow a hurt and fleeing target; the large stones would provide ample places to hide.
He checked the direction of the wind to make sure his blind was downwind of prey, and then found a large outcropping rock to set up under. Rather than stalk on his first trip to Valland, he'd see what the land would offer to the patient.

( Renner) The grunting of a large beast can be heard off in the distance. If Renner was to obverse, he might see a great furry beast nudging the earth for something. Maybe he was eating grass, or tearing into a carcass, or digging for worms, who knew? It had dirty reddish hair all over its massive body, as big around as a mammoth. It's head, also large, was like that of a buffalo, but with great tusks coming down from mouth, and then coming back upward: a weapon for fending off would-be attackers. Its fur hide was thick, and its skin thicker. Its hooves heavy with weight. There was no doubt, this was the Buunvar beast the innkeeper had spoke of.

Renner had thought the inkeep at the Blackened Bitch was exaggerating the size of the buunvar for effect, but he could see now that he was mistaken. He silently watched the beast dig at the earth, as though a boar might to uncover soft mushrooms beneath. He cursed to himself at the bad luck of having run out of the magical arrows he had been gifted back in the Tiller's Expanse. There was probably no way he could take this beast down himself. He'd have to wait for it to wander into a position where he might be able to hamstring it, or for another, less-impossible trophy beast to come along.

( Renner ) The great beast snorts, then groans and moves along. It stops every now and again to nudge the ground some more before snorting in some disappointment and moving on. Then it picks its head up and looks around slowly. Did it spot Renner? Was his position compromised? No, it had to be something else. Almost fifty feet away, behind the Buunvar, the grass begins to move. Any normal person might think it was the wind, but someone like Renner would know a small creature, or one in a prowling stance was nearby, stalking the Buunvar. The ordeal is out of range for Renner at the moment, but he can observe it, or try to move forward. Something shall die today. The Buunvar hears the purring of a great cat. A mighty roar sounds out as a sabre cat leaps from the prowl, onto the back of the Buunvar. It digs its claws into the furry bide, but does not penetrate. His teeth dig attempts to dig into the spine of the huge behemoth, but to no avail. The Buunvar jumps wildly, kicking up its back legs and then rearing high into the air, trying to toss the predator from its back.

The problem with taking on other predators is that they are more equipped to kill the hunter. However, a saber cat pelt would make a great prize. Renner continued to watch the fight. It was very likely the buunvar would try to flee, and if it weren't taken by a neck bite or a hamstring tear, then it would get away from the great cat. Either way, the chase could lead them both far from where he hid.
Still, he didn't want to miss an opportunity should it present itself. He picked his bow up from the ground and plucked out one of the arrows he had set into the earth. He set nocked the arrow to the bow and waited to see where the fracas would take the beasts. He knew a single arrow wouldn't be able to take down a great cat like this, but if he could get a lung shot or hind quarter shot, it would slow it down considerably and he'd be able to finish it off with his sword and axe.

The Jotun was quite the beast, slightly faster than Grandma had expected. Still, Vera should be able to handle him hopefully… The poor boy seemed to not have the stomach for this sort of thing, hopefully his lover would help him through it though! Moving to keep her distance from the Jotun, while still remaining out of its sight, Grandma would rummage through her bag, extracting a small black rune.
Although she still wished for her two companions to deal with the creature, she would still prepare a spell just in case anything unexpected was to happen. Energy would be channeled into the rune, causing it to glow with a faint purplish light.

Vera had capitalized on the delay cause by the fall. Using the time to prepare another bit of druidry, well the same bit of druidry but bigger. She finishes making her request, with just enough time to skip out of the way of the log. A pillar of stone shoots out of the ground, on a diagonal line, directly into the Jotun's groin. Though she isn't quite sure what to do next. Her usual strategy, was to beat the heal out of whatever pissed her off. That relied on her being stronger than her target though. Even with the earth helping her she wasn't positive, she was stronger than the giant. Vera was brash, not stupid.
"Got any plans Roy? Cause he is going to be pissed once he uncrosses his eyes."

( Renner) The Buunvar kicked and kicked, and the sabre cat gnawed as best it could - but to no avail. It was ultimately knocked from the great beasts's back. Disappointed, it whined for a moment and then, with its tail between its legs, stalked away. But the Buunvar was not finished. It had taken off in a gallop, and then turned around, stomped the ground, and began to charge for the cat. The cat growled and turned to run away: straight for Renner's position! ( Royal Fletcher Grandma Vera of the Celadine) "Urk!" The jotun lets go the log, which flies away from the fight, and stumbles back when the stone hits him in the groin. If he wasn't angry before, then he most certainly was now. "Rargh!" The jotun reared its hand back and punched Vera's stone, shattering most of it. He closes in on the duo, still ignoring Grandma, and when he closes in attempts to kick and swing at the two, hoping to use his brute force to crush their bones.

Renner needed to make a decision quickly. This was not an outcome he expected. A head-on shot at the cat would probably not phase it overmuch if it didn't strike an eye. He may be able to catch a flank with his sword as it passed, but then he still had the buunvar to deal with. The rock outcropping he was using as cover would probably collapse if the beast hit it at a full-on run.
He quickly dropped the arrow he had nocked and slung his bow around his chest. If they survived the buunvar's trampling, he could recover the arrows later. For now, he decided to vacate his blind to a safer location. He might catch the eye of the buunvar while he moved to another of the great stones, but the saber cat would likely be too busy trying to flee to take much notice.
He ducked out from under the outcropping and kept as low as he could while maintaining a good pace away from the path of the charging animals. He kept his right hand on the hilt of his sword and his left out in front of him for balance and to ward off any stray brush or grass he might encounter.

( Renner) The sabre cat flees, obviously quicker than the larger Buunvar. The Buunvar gives up chase; he has made the cat flee and now he is safe, or at least he believes so. He continues grazing on the fields, slowly making his way away from Renner's position. Some time passes, and finally a few elk appear. They're notably bigger than most elk Renner may have seen, with very large antlers. It's a small pack of them, 4 in total, and they seem to be stopping for a drink of water and to graze, like the Buunvar had been doing.
