"When you're out there, stay low stay quiet. If one of those things spots you before you spot it, you're dead."-Tania Alwhin to her rangers.
Besides the normal creatures that one would find in forests across the lands, the Winterlands house some fierce and beautiful beasts all their own.
The Painted Elk
These are rare beasts, preferring solitude to the usual herd-like behavior of their cousins. An adult is no less than three times the size of a normal elk. Both male and female produce antlers to defend themselves. Considered a prized kill in the Winterlands, their fur and horns are considered extremely prized and usually is kept by the hunter. The reason for this value or the unique patterns that dance across both the pelt and antlers. When one is slain a festival is held and all are allowed to enjoy a taste of the beast's flesh which is far more tender and succulent than normal elk.
These massive cousins of the brown bear stand thrice as tall as a man when on its hind legs. Its claws and strength can rip trees asunder and even a knight in full plate would be destroyed if they take a direct hit from the monster. It's so rare that it's often debated whether the monster exists, but pelts and stories of hunters killing the monsters are present enough. @grimm is believed to have killed one and wears its fur on his cloak.
These are a strange predator, rare and elusive. The beast is only seen in the White Pines. Only one has ever been brought down by a hunter but several have been seen. Surprisingly, there are no known attacks on people by this beast despite its clearly carnivorous appearance and its size; being nearly that of a horse. Some who spend their times hunting in the snowy north claim the beasts are smart and even help them hunt so long as they share the game.
Woe unto the unwary lumberjack that cuts into one of these creatures. Disguised as trees and normally as still in the presence of humans. They take offense to being attacked but otherwise are peaceful creatures. There are even stories of the Treants healing injured hunters in the wood that have somehow gained their favor. However, an opponent made of wood is tough opponent and the best method of winning the fight is retreating.
The White Wolves
The White Wolves
Somehow when breeding the Domar Wolves, the Winterlanders released a new breed of wolf into their forests. These beasts are much like the Domar Wolves; larger, smarter, and stronger than normal wolves. They are smaller, only growing to 4 feet in height compared the five Domar wolves grow to, but travel in packs and are not in the least bit tame. These predators have adapted all too well to the forests of the Winterlands and are known to target hunters and travelers in the lands.
These creatures are the most hated and feared in all of the Winterlands. These giant spiders have somehow managed to survive despite active attempts to drive them to extinction. Their venom is deadly and there is no cure. It creates its nest in thickly wooded areas but explores its territory to find prey, there is nothing that this thing doesn't view as prey. It's poison causes paralysis and extreme pain that spreads from the wound, which in itself is substantial. Full grown lurkers are sixteen feet across leg tip to leg tip.
