Xiong stopped and actually looked surprised at the hands that grabbed him "Well this is new.." he said "Let's climb up the ridge that sprouts hands and grab at me."
He climbed up close to the top enough for her to at least hear him "You are full of surprises aren't you." He said finally putting his hand to the top of the ridge his once white monk outfit now covered in dirt and mud.

The mysterious girl giggled in response to his rambling, sound pure as chimes in the breeze. As Xiong continued his ascent, she slunk into the trees, the laughter continuing to ask him to chase.
She led him through a section of the forest where the trees had been left untouched for hundreds of years, with trunks as wide as a small house, reaching toward the sky with branches thicker than a horse's neck. Lighting Xiong's path were those same childlike creatures that clung to him so tightly before- some of which were still clinging to his yukata from the climb. When he passed by they whispered, loud enough to make out the words, though they spoke no language known to the spymaster.
He had many other visitors along the way. Elk lifted their heads to stare at the two flouncing through the forest. They, too, were willed to follow, and in a troupe, pranced alongside the young man, keeping his pace as they bellowed. Birds fluttered down from the trees and made circles around Xiong in brilliant plume. Rabbits peaked from their holes and hopped forth, discarding their shyness. A song that had always been there, but had never been quite noticeable until now, willed them all forward, the voice of countless spirits lead by an airy soprano that demanded their attention with delicate high notes stringing together to tie them into a dreamy web.
However, suddenly, there were no woodland creatures anymore. The path seemed to have taken a very unexpected downward incline, as well.
If Xiong had been able to stop himself before sliding down the steep slope that had no foreseeable end, he would hear a bone-shaking crack from above. Right after, a flat piece of bark slapped onto the ground in front of him and slowly began to skate down the slope.
To his left, another piece of bark slapped down to this ground, this time with the spirit following suit, landing onto the flat surface and giving it the push it needed to rocket her down the slope, winding around an wave of soil and an obstacle course of white birch trees.

Xiong had gotten to the top and she disappeared again, he took a hefty sigh and took a breath. He took a swig from the water jug by his side. he then looked to his surrounding. They were different than before, white giant trunks and branches that reached higher than he had ever seen "I must be in a different... Something." This time he didnt run instead he walked to where the strange children were pointing.
He followed the path at a healthy clip, every once in a while pausing to listen to the children, but alas he did not know where they said. even so he would say "Thank you" as they point the way, even patting them on the head "Because none of this is weird at all.." he said to no one.
Suddenly, even stranger things happened as the woodland creatures walked besides him almost in unison following the girl as well "Well this is even more weirder." he said to the elk walking beside him, "You are curious too hmm?" He said following the sounds across the forest.
Then just as sudden as they arrived, the forest creatures was gone. "Ok..." he said looking around, just barely stopping before a steep incline. He put his hand over his eyes, looking down the path, there was no end. He let out a hefty sigh again.
He heard the loud CRACK! and narrowly jumping back in time just for a piece of bark to fall in front of him. "What is going on?" he looked up to see the girl riding a piece of bark herself "You know how to show a guy a good time." he said with glee running and jumping on the bark giving a good kick off the ground. He was whooping the whole way behind her having a grand old time, using his weight the guide the bark down hill. He even jumped over a few branches to land right back on his bark, or laid flat to doge branches completely.
He was eventually gaining on her, leaning forward, using his weight to speed up the peice of bark, he was in arms reach of her bark.

The strange woman gave him no easy chase, even as near as he was, she was so far!
A rock shelf swiftly approached ahead, which the spirit used as a lift to send her flying through the air. She spun as she soared, facing Xiong for a split second with those shining, half-moon eyes and a toothy grin made devious by her long canines. Her hair flickered behind her as she landed, leaving a dark comet tail wherever she went. She wound between the trees wildly, but with utmost confidence, sometimes skating her makeshift sled against the side of trees to ping-pong her from one trunk to another.

Just has he was about the reach her barl, she had jumped in the air, turning around to seemingly taunt him. "Shit." he said out of a little frustration but he was clearly enjoying their cat and mouse. He followed suit ramping of the rock cliff getting a decent amount of air time, but he didnt quite stick the landing.
He landed just behind her but in a branch breaking the bark in twine. He let out an oof just gripping on a branch "Uh oh." he said as his left hand started to slip, "Shit!" he repeated and his hand slipped from branch now barely holding on he looked down and the ground realizing how high he really was "SHiii-" he started to say as his other hand slipped from the branch, now falling from the higher branch he manage to redirect to a lower branch hitting hi head against the hard wood hard enough for him to black out.

The spirit noticed Xiong's fall almost too late. She reached her arms up, hands grasping at the air as she willed an abundance of vines, heavy with soft leaves, from the ground below the spymaster. Even with the foliage reaching out for him, he wouldn't find his consciousness staying with him. Darkness swarmed the young man's vision with swift abandon, but not before witnessing the spirit approach him. _______________________ A soft bobble of movement and the heat on his cheeks might have been enough to wake the sleeping man. If not, then the noisy chatter of two people failing very hard to whisper certainly would. Xiong would find himself in the shallow waters of a clear spring. It sat in a wide clearing at the base of a lush mountain filled with white birch trees. The spring itself was quite large, taking up a good portion of the clearing, lined by stones stacked at its sides. Behind him, there was a small shrine, barely big enough to enter standing up. Its wood was worn and cobwebs were strewn around every corner. In the middle of the shrine sat a statue that would be immediately recognizable to Xiong as that mysterious, moon-eyed enigma from earlier. She sat with her legs folded, one hand reaching outward with a dish in her hand. Dust and mold had settled onto the fine stone statue, the only offering that the shrine had seen in some time. Giggled erupted from behind the statue. Whispers of "Shhh! He'll find us!" and "You shush! You're making all the noise!" were no secrets to the young man's ears. After a pause, two sets of bright blue eyes peaked out from behind the statue, staring up at the spymaster. So short and so innocent, they were hardly more than children. They wore torn rags and hoods made from the snouts of animals, whose ears perked up in the air as if to illustrate the children's curiosity. They screeched in surprise, running past Xiong into the water. "He saw us!"

Xiong's consciousnesses slipped away, not before feeling a bedding that was enough to cushion most of his fall but in the end his head was hit hard enough for him to slip away, however he did see the woman approached him, instinctively he reached out for help as the darkness overcame him.
_________________________________________
Xiong awoke in a daze, a minor throbbing in his head, which considering his fall is very surprising for him. Feeling the warmth of the spring refreshed him but not after jumping up, scanning his surroundings for the woman. He spotted the shrine, and another pang of intense curiosity hit him. He stood up, slowly approaching the shrine, removing the muddy and now soaked monk garb, placing it on top of one of the sideways rocks neatly. When he reached the shrine he gasped slightly, fully recognizing the statue a the woman he had been chasing "Well I feel down right foolish for not thinking about this" He said with a chuckle, upon further inspection he noticed the disrepair of the shrine and the lack of and offering, he took a sad sigh "I see no one has been here in a while.." he said with a touch of sadness in his voice. He cleared the cobwebs from the statue. He placed the only thing he had on him, the prayer beads he wore around his neck, and bowed before the statue.
Suddenly he shot up, hearing the giggling "Those are new.." he said to himself peaking around the shrine to find the source. Then just as sudden as the giggle, after a long pause two seeming little children ran past him into the water "Woah!" he said in surprise, "Wait..?" he said reaching his hand out towards them "Where am I?" He said looking around for the woman, the minor throb still beating at the back of his head.

The children trudged through the water with clumsy little legs. Eventually, one flopped all the way in until he was upside-down, legs kicking above the waves. The other splashed her way in a torrent around her unfortunate counterpart.
"You're at a shrine, silly!" she cried out, reaching over to grab the other child's legs and pull him upright. She resigned herself to the same fate as soon as the wolf-skinned boy was on his feet, taking in a big gulp of air, cheeks flushed from the strain. He shook his little body, splattering water in every direction before grinning up at Xiong. "We're in the forest! I think... people call it the Kiyoyai forest?"
Exploding from the water behind him was the fox-eared girl, dunking the boy's head beneath the water once more. "Kiyonai, silly! And we're only halfway into the Kiyonai forest! We're halfway into the not-Kiyo-forest, too!"

Xiong raised and eyebrow at the kids "A shrine..? For what..?" he tuned around an exaimed the shrine again "How did I get here..? I remember following a girl through the woods and I missed the landing on a tree branch and fell." He said to no one in particular and he tided up the shrine, not distubing the moss or and life on it.. Just the dust and dirt that accumulated "I wonder if she brought me here.." he said.. His stomach grumbled a bit.
"Mmm, how long was I out children?" He said turning back to them walking towards them slowly. "I left all my stuff at the cave.. " he sighed sadly as he got out of the water grabbing his now dirty... And soaked monks garb. He began to wring it out the dirty and water flowing on the ground itself.

The children looked at one another inquisitively, counting on their little fingers. "Four nights...
"And you woke up on the fifth day!"
They splayed out their hands to show him, grinning from ear to ear. "Your head looked like a watermelon got dropped!"
"Maybe that's why you're not quite here and not quite there?"
"Because the water helped you but it was almost too late!"
As he cleaned, they circled him again, clapping their hands. "Too late! Toooooooo late!"
If ever he took his eyes away from the statue in the altar, there would be heard a soft rattling. Upon looking back, he would see that the prayer beads and the statue were... gone.
"... too late, too late," joined a soft voice with the chanting, rattling the prayer beads. The sound circled the shrine once, always just out of Xiong's eyesight, until there was a small splash.
There, at the entrance, staring at him with those half-moon eyes was the spirit.
Her hair draped down her back and over her shoulders until it disappeared into the water. She wore a simple shift that ended before her knees, a frock very different than a kimono. She was a pale, slender thing, but something about the way she stood there, the way she looked at him, smirking with absolute confidence, said that she wasn't at all a weak thing.
"Few have been here in the last few years. None have sought to show me such gratitude."
Her voice, it was delicate, singsong, but wise and stern all at once.

Xiong shook his head, sighing slightly at the thought, "Five days." He muttered continuing to clean, he glanced over to the children "I bet it did. I did take quite a fall, I'm surprised to be alive or even half alive." He looked around for a moment "Between life and death you mean?"
Suddenly the shrine and beads disappeared, "What the..?" He said trying to follow the sound of rattling beads, always getting there a bit to late. Until his eyes fell upon her, his gaze met her half moon eyes. In the way she presented herself, not only was she strong, Xiong thought she attractive. A smile appeared on his face, ever so charmingly he said "Ah, I honestly thought I was chasing my imagination through the forest" he laughed and gave her a curt bow. "A pleasure to meet you face to face." Xiong nodded at the prayer beads which were very worn out and the color weathered, "I spend my youth as a Monk in a monastery. They stressed the Importance of the shrines, they should always be presented with a gift. Unfortunately I travel light and left all my possessions at the cave." He approached her slowly, "Out of curiosity why show yourself to me?"

"Offerings that come from the heart are more than enough," she said, slipping the beads around her neck. They had been with the man a long time and were brimming with his energy. With a smirk, she extended a hand toward the shrine.
Vines, young and green, spidered around the railings and blossomed into gossamer white flowers. "Because you accepted my invitation... and also brought me a gift. Who am I, as a host, to deny you my presence?"
The children skittered up to her and grabbed onto her legs, beaming up at both Xiong and the spirit. She did not move as he approached, suddenly not as shy as she pretended to be before. "You do not seem frightened. Perhaps you have come across our kind in the past? Or perhaps you are in shock. The waters should have healed the trauma to your head, at least."

Xiong smiled softly now standing a goof 4 feet from her, the water running down his toned body, tracing down many scars of various types. Swords, Arrows, spear. Whip marks on his back but the worst of all the scars was on both of his wrist and neck, from his time in slavery being chained up. Instinctively Xiong touched his wrist scar on his right arm, with a save sigh he said "I died once. A few years ago.... I remember waking up in a forest just like this, A young girl in a hooded white robe stood before me.." He paused, the expression on his face twisted into mixture of pain and sorrow. "She put his hand on my heart... And I woke up." He purposefully stop there but there was more to the story than just what he said "But this feels a bit different, not as cold..."
Xiongs golden eyes lock onto her half moon eyes "My name is Xiong Shuren" he smiled softly at her "Who are you?"

A girl in a white robe. She hadn't come in contact with someone like that. Not recently.
"I don't have a name for myself, and all those given have been forgotten, as my shrine was," she told the monk. "Call me what you will, Xiong Shuren, and let others know it. Will you do that for me?"
She never once dropped his gaze after their eyes locked. There was less playfulness here in her tone.

Xiong was a mere 2 feet away, circling her, slowly. He tapped his bottom lip with b s left hand as his right hand just barely caressed her skin. His eyes studied her carefully, taking in her features. Commuting them to memory, "I will call you Meyli." He smiled ever so sweetly, "In my language it means beautiful." He said returning to the front of her "Tell me what I can do to help you Meyli?" His flirty tone ended as he lowered his head to her "It would be my honor Meyli." He looked over at the now blooming shrine. "What if I built one? In my home. The company I keep are.. different but they are spiritual in their own ways. My home is very busy with visitors." He nods.

"Flattering," said the spirit, now known as Meyli. She turned her head to watch him circle her, barely taking her eyes off him for a second. Even if she was unafraid, there was wariness in her actions.
"A shrine in your home... normally I would disagree. But if you say you have many visitors, then I shall oblige. I am here for my name to be known by many, not to be coveted by one man," she told him. She did give him a smile. "Even if the man has much admiration for me. Have I enchanted you so much, Xiong Shuren, that you would flirt with an old spirit?"

Xiong smiled ever so sweetly, "Please just call me Xiong. No need for formalities Meyli." He walked over to the water and stepped in it. He sat down at the edge so just his ankles are in the water.
Xiong looked back at her with a smile "Let's just say. I am a man who enjoys the chase." He laughed as he rubbed the back of his head. "How about two then? A shrine in my personal home and one a little off the main road leading into Kiyonai? Protected by my own people of course." He placed his hand in the water "My home is.. Well, it is a brothel. Of sorts.." He chuckled softly "As I said. I was once a monk,we trained how to fight. They always said 'To transcend violence is to understand violence'.." Xiong signed sadly "A good concept but they didn't see what I saw. Injustice. Murder. Thievery... Slaves. They did nothing. Until the slavers came for us. Most were killed, the young ones were taken, some sold. But I'd you were a good fighter they took you to be their very own living weapon." He rubbed the shackle scar around his neck. "I became complacent with the fate I was dealt. I took life as was commanded, stole as commanded. One day I saw a young girl.. A man was touching her.. She was so young.. In her I saw myself. So I tried.to fight them. They killed me, that's when I saw the visage of death. She pushed me back into my body. I felt a power I never felt before, a supernatural rage. I managed to kill most of the slavers. Freed her and more slaves. We went on to wipe most of the slaver organizations along the coast. All for justice... Now the brothel runs as a front. We control the flow of information."

The spirit's expression darkened as Xiong told his story. Many slaves had pleaded to her for help in the past and she heard their prayers, hiding them in the realm between realms, the same place the man found himself now.
"I would applaud you for such a feat, but it sounded desperate. Such an event... no less than sorrowful. Hopefully, you have turned it into something less so. That is to be seen," she said, just before glancing at the tiny spirits at her knees.
They glanced at one another inquisitively, as though unsure. They then began to dance around her, hands flung into the air. "A new house?"
"A new house!"
"Meeting new people!"
"New people to play with!"

Xiongs mood changed as he saw the children dance around, "It also functions as a Inn. It's a very busy place to be sure. The road that it's on leads into the city. The area surrounding it was considered a poor district. That is until my people and I moved in." Xiong smiles sweetly. "My home in the center of it. Very private."
Xiong lays back, feet still in the water. He sighs "Its beautiful here. Thank you for bringing me." He puts his hands behind his head."So what kind of spirit are you?" He said offering for her to sit next to.him. For the kids as well.

"Busy. That is preferable," the spirit told Xiong. When prompted, she took a seat next to him and smiled. The children took up seats on either side of him, kicking their feet.
The man did not treat her like a spirit, which was surprising. In years past, when many people came by the shrine, they were nothing less than honored or stunned when she rewarded them with a glance.
Upon hearing his question, she cast her gaze into the water at her feet. "A forest guardian usually prayed for safe travels through the forest. I hide those who run and defend those who fight for their protection. Former slaves, like yourself, are short in supply now. Perhaps it is because of your efforts."
