With the recent construction of Port Silverion, enterprising river boat captains quickly found a new source of income: ferrying people between the new port and the bustling Free City itself. The Break of Dawn is such a ferry. It's a typical galley though it uses magic to operate the oars. And whereas before it carried odd cargo—usually fish or lumber—now it carries odd passengers. Two such passengers are boarding the ship today. The kobold Stand Master, Doobie, and his new student Lu Dan Feng, have booked passage all the way to Port Silverion. The inexpensive fair makes the Break of Dawn an attractive alternative to walking the entire distance. Their shared room is in the converted hold of the ship. Still smelling faintly of fish, these two particular passengers have decided to pass the time on deck.

Lu Dan Feng stands on the deck of the Break of Dawn, looking out across the Silverion river at the docks of the Free City of Isra. There was a lot of activity there. Lots of busy fishermen and sailors moving about, lots of city folk browsing the items being unloaded into carts for delivery. Minus the lack of salty sea air, it all reminds her of home.
She turns to her companion and says, "I can't tell you why I chose this boat over the others. It just seemed like the one I should choose. Does that make sense?"

Doobie stumbled around the ship, not used to being on the water, he'd never been on a boat. He hanged changed his outfit to his sleeveless top that showed off his muscles."AIIIEEE! So hard to move around!"
Doobie found something to hold on to and talked with his student. "Indeed I understand, it's a sense of destiny or intuition whatever you wish to call it."
Doobie turned to look around the ship, looking for suspicious people.

While Dan Feng looks out at the docks, Doobie looks behind her to the boat. There's perhaps a dozen people on deck at the moment, mostly crew. There's three times as many below deck, sailors and sailor-mages working on the enchanted oars. Doobie sees a few passengers on deck, almost all Isran and human. If there is a Stand user then they're certainly down below. In the cabins, perhaps.
Soon the captain orders the gangplank withdrawn. The oars begin to twirl and crash into the placid waters of the Silverion River. If the gentle rocking of the boat while docked bothers Doobie, the sudden lurch of it pulling away from the pier would be only worse.
But just as suddenly as the boat jerked away from its moorings it settles down into a calm forward motion, the oars and the current taking the Break of Down downstream.

"Waaaaa!" Doobie tumbles around the deck as it begins the move, once the movement is constant Doobie slides back to Dan Feng's position. "I've never been on a boat."

"Have you not? In all your wandering and vagabonding you've never come across a river? Did you just swim across?" Dan Feng smiles at the little kobold. For the first time since they've met she seems to have an advantage over him.
"I came to this land on a ship. Bigger than this one. And we sailed across the ocean. If that ship could safely transport me then I'm sure this one can you." She watches Doobie try to maintain his balance and continues, "but if you need to you can just hold onto the railing. Or maybe Starman can carry you."

"I've swam across rivers, yes. Or used Starman to jump over them. In time I shall regain my balance I'm sure!" Doobie responds. "Where did you come from if I may ask? I myself came from a shithole known as the Moorlands. It was terrible there, the other Kobolds always bullied me because of my intellect which they perceived as Smartassery. I left that place to pursue my dreams of gaining knowledge, it's a shame I left my mother and siblings behind, but I'm sure they're fine. I don't really have a desire to return there anytime soon."
Doobie tried moving around the ship, it was getting a little easier for him as he recollected his origins.

Dan Feng listens to Doobie's short description of his home and family. She says, "I'd rather not share anything like that. As part of my training to control Chapel, I've been trying to put all of it out of my mind. Not thinking about it makes it easier to control."
It is more than just her desire to control her Stand. She doesn't want to remember everything that happened back then in her home across the sea. Sure, she had a breakdown recently when she got sick and started seeing Chapel. That lead her to that church eventually. But since then, since getting on the road with Doobie, things have been better. Best to keep it that way.
Keeping on the subject of Doobie's past, though, Dan Feng says, "did you get Starman like I got Chapel? You wake up sick one day and just see him in the room with you?"

"Oh-oh really?!" Doobie had struck a shocked pose, "I apologize! I didn't realize!"
The Kobold continues telling his own story as Dan Feng wishes. "Ah, Starman! Hmhm, no, I got Starman in a natural way. When I originally manifested my Stand it looked very different, it was a construct of fire and magma. Over time I worked to perfect it with some inspiration I couldn't explain. I thought and meditated and formed Starman into how he looks now. So yeah, I gained Starman through training, I created him. Hm... though there is more to that I hypothesize. I have a theory if you'll entertain it."
Doobie leaned on a rail and thought up his theory to what a Stand is, which included a story of his origins, "You see, before I ever had magical powers I was but a mundane Kobold, stupid and incapable of the simplest of magicks. I was in the barren fields of the Moorlands, hoping to find some food to bring home to my family, I was not the best hunter so I usually found things that were already dead. The sun was high in the sky, the heat was sweltering and I was about to call it quits and head home, but I saw something in the distance and scampered over to it. Well, what I found was a magician of some sort, he was dying of thirst and the sun had poisoned him to the point that he could no longer move. I came to the mage as his last few breaths released, there was nothing to do about it, he was a goner. As his life was extinguished however, I saw something leave his body, like a puff of golden smoke, it billowed out of him and created a form similar to the mage. I came over and touched the body to start searching it for stuff, and I was struck with a force of magic! The magicians magic had transferred into my own body, I imediately gained intelligence and aptitude. Once I came to my senses and got up I coughed and the golden smoke came out. I believe the Magicians soul decided to stick with me since I had inherited its magic, like its life's work could continue through me, and it has. I took all of the Mage's things, his books and scrolls, and I studied every night becoming more intelligent and I trained until I was the Kobold you see before you today."
Doobie sighs, it had been a few years since he saw that Mage's dead body. He'd been thinking for a long time about the golden smoke, and he had realized recently that he absorbed the man's essence and soul. "I believe that the soul of the dead mage is Starman, given a new form. We work together like brothers for mutual survival. I theorize that all Stand's are made from the souls of the dead, transformed by the mingling with our own souls inside our bodies. What do you think?"

Doobie doesn't hold a high regard for his people, it seems. Calling them mundane and stupid. The only other kobold she's ever seen is Xochti and she didn't seem to be an idiot. So she can't tell if he's giving an accurate description of kobolds or just his own biased opinion of a hated homeland. It doesn't matter, really, one way or the other. She accepts his story and doesn't feel the need to comment on it.
However, Doobie says he got Starman in a natural way. Does that mean he thinks Chapel came to her in an unnatural way? That's a disconcerting thought. Though she doesn't see how the ghost of a dead wandering mage inhabiting his body is somehow more natural than just waking up with a Stand one day. She wouldn't put it that way, though, when talking to her Master.
"It is an interesting thought. Are you saying that Chapel is some kind of dead house that wants to live on through me? I don't like the sound of that."

Doobie giggles, "You're funny Dan Feng! No, that would be silly, a dead house. No I believe Chapel used to be a lost spirit, when it became bound to you, it morphed into its current form in a way that would likely be familiar to you and be a combination of both your personalities. I believe that's what the spirit Dart does, it binds spirits to people when it stabs them."
Doobie would continue, "The spirit may have been one of someone close to you that was watching over you after death, or it could have been a random lost soul."

Dan Feng is familiar with the dead keeping watch over her. It is a commonplace concept to her people. However, there are no stories of the dead turning into ghostly rooms like Chapel. She thinks that Doobie might be wrong about this but she keeps it to herself. After all, maybe the dead act differently in these lands. Could a foreign spirit be attached to her?
"Perhaps," she says. "I do not know of anyone who has died recently. Perhaps it is some stranger's lost soul." She doesn't think so, though.
Turning her attention away from the passing river shore she looks at Doobie and asks, "what do you mean by the Spirit Dart? What is that?"

"The Spirit Dart is a weapon of antiquity I've been made aware of recently after I interogatted an enemy Stand User that my previous student defeated. It was formerly in the posession of a priest, but was stolen, now this person is going around stabbing unaware people with it. When impaled by the Dart, you enter an unconscious state, you become sick, when you awaken a Stand awakens with you, brought from the spiritual plane to go through its new symbiotic experience with its Master. This dart is paired with an atlatl, used to launch it from a distance." Doobie passes on the information of the Spirit Dart that he had gathered over the past few months. "Before meeting you, I encountered three other Stand Users, when interviewed they all claimed to have been stabbed by this dart before their Stands manifested. Their recollections of the incidents were always described as dream-like as they thought they imagined being struck with the dart, since it left no wound on them, but the stories are consistent which means this artifact must exist, and with it in the wrong hands, innocents can be harmed."
Doobie watched the river pass by as he spoke, he turned to Dan Feng once he was finished, waiting to hear what she had to say about it.
