"Hm? She's doing what?"
Riley looked over to Cheesecake, who had somehow sealed the skillet with glue and began violently shaking the contents, smashing it against the stove top like a drum stick over and over.
"Hey, Cheese!"
She stopped for a moment to look over to him.
"...try using the other stovetop, that one's not as hot."
Cheesecake paused and looked to the other side of the stove and chirped in agreement before dropping it loudly onto the top and opening the contents. Flames saturated the pan in red heat. Taking an extinguisher, she blasted the skillet and covered it in white, frosted goo. She wiped her brow and sighed contently before slapping the contents onto a plate, then putting the cup of hideous green liquid onto a tray with it before floating over to Roy.
"Oh, hey, you're meal's ready. Enjoy!"
As Roy watched her arrive, he would see a black block of ash on the plate as well as what looked like raw sewage in a cup. However, the moment he blinked and the plate hit the table, the most delicious of ham-and-cheese paninis can be see freshly made along with a cup of sweet-smelling hot chocolate with an image of Cheesecake's smiling face printed in whipped cream on top.

Roy looked from the food to the fairy in shock. What was this? Some sort of magical trick? Was it all an illusion? Would he get ill from eating this? It couldn't possibly be real...he leaned in hesitantly, about to take a cautious bite, but stopped.
"Um...my grandma told me to never accept food from fairies...nothing personal, but I don't know if I should. It was one of her big rules, right up there with 'never kick a small animal' and 'no shoes on the couch'. So...I don't know what I should do..."
He sighed. It looked delicious, but years of his grandmother's stories were ingrained into his mind. It had to be fine, the fairy worked at a restaurant. Still, though, Gran's words stuck with him. Besides, Roxanne had told him stories too. Her friend Dixie had gotten lost in the woods and had accepted food from a fairy...a little while later, she'd been pregnant with a fairy's child. That was what she had told everyone, anyway. Now that Roy thought about it, there was a chance that the child hadn't been a fairy's child at all. It did look somewhat like one of the adventurers that stopped by the town occasionally.

Roy nodded, still not completely reassured. Riley had said it was alright, so it had to be alright...didn't it? He glanced from the fairy to the food one more time, then took a hesitant sip of the hot chocolate. It was delicious, more better than he would have suspected considering the ingredients.
"Wow...how did you make this? It's really good! I, uh...saw you putting in all sorts of things. What did you do to make it so sweet?"
Roy was something of a connoisseur of hot chocolate. He rated this fairy-made chocolate as about on par with his Uncle Renalt's, but not as good as Gran's. It was delicious, but far from the best he'd ever had.
"The best hot chocolate I've ever had came from a witch who rode around the woods in a sleigh, trying to kidnap children by offering them hot chocolate and Sakland Delights. I was wandering around the forest in the snow, and I found her leaning against a lamppost. Can you imagine? A lamppost in the woods! It must have been magic. Anyways, she had white hair and a white face, and had a lion-skin coat and a beaver-fur hat. It looked awfully cozy, and I was cold. She gave me some hot chocolate and tried to convince me to ride back with her in her sleigh, but I got scared and ran away. When I got back, my cousin Roxanne scolded me and told me not to accept hot chocolate from witches. I didn't learn about how she kidnapped kids until later."

"Cheesecake's not like that. Look, I won't boast how great fey are. We're like cattle to them, fey are horrifying. But Cheese here? They're no better to her than they are to us. Probably even worse, they see her the same way you see a tooth brush. She couldn't afford to trick people and from what I can tell she doesn't have a reason to."
Cheesecake chirped and nodded, floating up and sitting on Riley's head. Riley petted her with a single finger, causing her to purr like a guinea pig.
"Still, fey are fey, and she has the same powers they do. The thing about fey is they literally do not care about our reality's rules. The laws of physics mean nothing to them. It's how something so chubby like Cheesecake can fly on those tiny wings."
Cheesecake pouted and stomped on Riley's head. He chuckled.
"Cheesecake just needs materials to cook. Doesn't matter what, she can make whatever she wants to from it. Don't worry, I was kinda concerned when she cooked for the first time for me. She took a ceramic bowl, smashed it, put the pieces in a large cup, and gave it to me. It was ale. She can literally do anything she puts her mind to, just because she ignores how our world works."

"Oh...that's nice, I suppose."
Roy sipped the hot chocolate, trying not to think about it too much. After all, if the fairy simply ignored reality, the hot chocolate could turn back into horrible things at any moment if she decided to suddenly obey.
"So she doesn't talk, huh? I suppose she can understand us, though..."
He looked up at the little sprite, smiling at her with a mouthful of pointed fangs. Even though it had been over a year since he'd been turned into a vampire against his will, he still sometimes forgot that a friendly smile wasn't so friendly anymore.

"She speaks archaic Sylvan, which sounds like bird chirps to us. It took me a while to figure it out myself but I learned it fairly quickly."
Cheesecake grinned. Neither seemed intimidated or put off by the fangs.
"Honestly, I don't know where I'd be without her. She came to me at a very dark time in my life and brought me back from the brink of depression."
Cheesecake began to chirp to Riley who shook his head.
"I don't count that because the norn said it was just a potential outcome."

Roy nodded, impressed. Riley could understand the chirps? They all sounded the same to him. He wondered briefly how the raccoon was able to speak the language, but decided that it was just probably a magic raccoon. There certainly were quite a few magical animals running around nowadays.
"Well, that's good that she was able to help you, then. What's the norn?"

"Norn are the keepers of fate. Contrary to popular belief, we're all predestined to a certain outcome, we just don't know it and it can be altered slightly. Back when I first met Cheesecake she was sadly destined to die in the forest she was born by a wolf attack. However, I met her before that happened and healed her back to full health. Because of that, Cheesecake's fate was wildly altered from what was expected and a norn came to me. Apparently that one event set off a chain reaction of infinite outcomes to both of our fates, ranging from me dying and her becoming violent and cruel to her dying and me becoming a death knight out of grief. I even got to see my future daughter and her children! We got to saw my family line thousands upon thousands of years into the future, to the point technology advanced far beyond what you'd understand. At that point, however, it was clear why the norn was warning us.
Cheesecake had become a goddess."

Checkers the Raccoon

Age: Ancient
Physical Description: Checkers appears to be a rather nondescript raccoon on the larger end of size for one, weighing in at about 20lbs and with a length of about two feet. He always appears to be happy, with a raccoon smile on his face and an incredibly mischievous glint in his eyes.
Clothes and Equipment: He wears nothing but a cape, which for all intents and purposes appears to be a red and white checkered table cloth that one would use for a picnic on a nice summer day. From this cape, he can draw all manner of strange and assorted items, usually, they are useless to whomever he is giving them to.

He looked at her inquisitely, no one had ever asked him what his story was. Not that he had any intention of giving the truth. Mainly because he wasn't sure what the truth was any more, it had been so long ago.
"Not entirely certain, I came about a long time ago. Demigod of mischief and raccoons you see, born of some sort of Trickery god I imagine, but which one I have no clue, and I have never heard from them. I could even be the result of some powerful.arch mage's sick experiment. Who knows? My origins are dust in the wind at this point."

"Hmm? A goddess? That's sort of neat, I guess..."
Roy tried not to think about all the possible timelines and predetermined futures business. It hurt his head. Professor Echoes might enjoy it, but he didn't at all, so he decided to change the subject.
"So...what made you decide to open a tavern, of all places? Desire to meet more people? The fact that you have a cook?"

Roy nodded. It made sense, he supposed. Whenever he was out looking for ingredients for his uncle, he often found himself wishing that there was an inn nearby with a nice mug of hot chocolate waiting for him.
"But why in the city, though? There's lots of taverns here already...wouldn't business be better outside, on the road? I've seen a lot of roadside taverns, and they all seem to be doing well. Lots of hungry travelers, you know."

"I'm not much for the country....I was born and raised in a city so I'm most comfortable there. Besides, no other tavern has a fairy as their mascot."
Cheesecake chirped happily as she struck a dynamic pose.

Roy chuckled. He understood, as he was a city boy too. And Cheesecake was certainly an adorable mascot.
"Oh yeah, I prefer cities. And yeah, you're right. Most places just have like...boars and dogs and stuff. No fairies. I wonder why. She's also a really good cook, too."
He grinned at the little sprite. She seemed friendly enough. Not a baby-thief.

You're right to fear the fey, they don't consider you or me more than cattle. Well, other than Cheese of course. She has a 'secret' crush on me."

"That's funny. I guess Roxanne was right, huh? So...how did she get the name 'Cheesecake'?"
Roy looked at the tiny fairy again. She had a crush on Riley? That was funny. She certainly was the friendliest fairy he'd ever seen or heard of. It was a shame that not all of them were like that, he would have liked to have a fairy buddy like Riley. That would have been nice.

(You should inquire about that, I'm working on lore about sprites being about as customizable as a sports car.)
Riley looked sheepish as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh, uh....I was really hungry when I first met her...and, uh, all I could think about was the food...she reminded me of cheesecake, so that's what I called her. She seems to like it. Apparently sprites don't get names normally so it's a huge deal to her."

Roy chuckled. How could such a tiny sprite remind him of cheesecake? Perhaps she was much chubbier when they met and had since lost some weight.
"That's funny. I wish I had a fairy buddy sometimes to keep me company or to keep me out of trouble. I try to stay away from trouble myself, but trouble finds me. It's very worrisome. Am I just naturally a trouble magnet? Do I have so little trouble inside me that I attract it from all over?"
Roy had only ever seen a magnet once before, when his cousin Robert had bought one in some foreign country and brought it over. It was an odd piece of rock that attracted metal, and Roy had been told that it was used in making compasses. What was more, Robert had told him that it was completely non-magical. Roy hadn't believed his cousin, of course. What else could explain it but magic?

Riley scratched his chin for a bit, Cheesecake emulated.
"Well....I do know a couple ways to get you a companion....Tell you what, come back tonight after the crowds die down and we'll head into the forest. We'll try to get you set up with a new fairy friend."
