Firudo no Okome (Fields of Black Rice) The Firudo no Okome separate Shiniga from the rest of the Katshiman provinces. The rice farms are a sign of mountains, foothills, valleys, and other mountainous land formations of the Rakka Hoshi no Sanymaku. These fields/border are protected by the farmers and contracted Shiniga Ashigaru and Akita-Ken.
Various armed watchtowers, small outposts, homes, and barn like buildings can be seen across the fields. In the mountain side farms, bunkers were built in their camouflage. Every step you take is being watched. These crops are cash crops and this is their border, they need to know what is going on outside the mountains instead of getting surprised.

A rider came, bearing the emblem of the Imperial Palace upon his horse and upon his breast. He road until he had to pull the reins on his horse and approach a watch tower for the Shiniga Province. He was stone-faced. Much like the Uesung had a dark reputation, everyone knew that the men of the Shiniga were no ordinary men. Some called them Oni, as well.
"I have a message from Her Divine Imperial Highness, the Golden Empress of Katashima for Daimyo Ryuk. I am meant to deliver it," he told whoever he was supposed to speak to.

A guard in the watchtower waved them on. They knew the Imperial emblem and that it was no worry to them. The guard said nothing and began looking around from up high.
(Thanks for the Oni compliment. The right vibe I was wanting to send off, despite being good guys.)
