Grey would follow the directions that Greta had given him a few days earlier. They filled their bellies and Grey procured some food and drink for the journey; Royal was permitted to use one of the horses that had belonged to one of the men Grey had killed. He and Royal Fletcher would make their way west, towards the Free Plains. Along the way they'd camp on the side of the road and let Lassie and her new equine companion drink from the rivers and lakes. Ultimately they came upon the Silverion River and, as they were not here to cause problems, passed through. Grey nodded at the guards, but said nothing - as he was not one to speak often. "Thank you, lad, for traveling with me," he says to Royal. "I am going to the Black Tower and see what I can learn there. If you wish to accompany me, you may; otherwise, I bid you farewell, and hope we do meet again."

Roy rode nervously, praying desperately that the horse wouldn't buck him off. He wasn't very fond of horses, ever since he fell off a pony at a fairground. Still, it was quicker than walking, and he could keep up with Grey more easily. He'd never been told exactly where they were going, so he was surprised when Grey mentioned that he was going to the Black Tower.
"Black Tower? Oh no, that's not for me at all, Mr. Grey. Sorry, but that's really not what I do...they do all sorts of frightening things in there. I think we'll have to part ways here. Um...it was nice meeting you. Good-bye!"
Waving, he rode slowly away in the direction of the family estate. Hopefully he wouldn't be thrown off and trampled by his horse before he arrived there.

The little gnome glanced up at the large fortifications on the opposite end of the bridge. Clutched in his hand was a thin, ragged parchment.
“Why is everything here so big?” he said, craning his neck to look up at the constructions, “Everyone, as well.” He mused to himself: “Well, the border guard did say I could pass freely if I didn’t intend to cause trouble… and I don’t think I intend to cause trouble.”
Clapping his hands together, Ambicat smiled and shoved the paper into one of the pockets of his farmer’s tunic, “Well then, off I go,” he said. Puffing out his chest (a vain attempt to make himself look bigger), he goes to make his way across the bridge, and into the nation on the other side.

Silas had decided to bypass the battle that was brewing in New Brimiarde. He had thought to seek his death on that field, but that would be too mercyful for one such as himself. No, he would live and stone for his crimes.
On the way east Silas had stollen some new cloths from a wash line. He didn't like to steal, but liked wearing rags even less.
As Silas crossed into the Free Planes he thought idly of his last visit to Isra. It had been a pleasant time. He would have to return to the Midnight Sun, for what a wonderful establishment that was. The food was good and rooms affordable, and there was a particularity alluring serving girl, if Silas remembered correctly. Another pretty women flashed into Silas's mind, accompanied by a twang of guilt. The seamstress with the magic boutique. Silas lamented the loss of the coat he had bought there, but...Well Silas would not dwell on that time.

Several days after the first sighting of the insect creature at Isra's walls, more had arrived. This time, it was guards at the eastern bridges that'd see them... first one, then two, then three. They flew around in quickly frenzied circles, and this time neither of them landed anywhere long enough for the troops to get a closer look. Yet relayed information or rumors among the guard might have many realizing that it was likely the same species that was sighted before...

Uneasy murmurs spread through the guards as they watch the things buzzing about. Word had indeed gotten around about ‘the comically large mosquito’, both through official and backend channels. However, nowhere was their mention of more.
A lumberjack, leading a cart of logs across the bridge toward the city, turns and notices the things. For a moment, he stares, maintaining his pace. Then, he decides that he wants absolutely no part of that, hops up onto the wagon, and spurs his ox to go faster.
After reporting the sighting to the relevant parties, the guards have little choice but to remain at their posts, handling their crossbows uneasily. While the majority of them don’t have any exceptional aversion to insects, they all recognize a potential threat and hold themselves accordingly.

Soon, more and more arrived after the winged vanguard that had mainly stopped to crawl along the bridge walls, as though exploring the surroundings. What started as a tentative alarm would descend into a very real fear as they kept arriving from the sky, soon amounting to what most would observe to be a "swarm" that slowly began to harass the people in their curiosity.
They didn't seem entirely malicious, and not at all intelligent, yet it would be clear that these creatures were just as unfamiliar with this environment as it was with them. Yet within a matter of moments, it'd take only a sudden movement, or perhaps a fearful release of a crossbow's quarrel as one buzzed threateningly around a soldier's head, before the interspecial tension began a spark. Who started it would most likely go unknown, but the swarm suddenly perceived the people as a threat, and the energy with which they flew and zig-zagged through the sky would skyrocket into a frenzy.
Suddenly, several of them began diving for soldiers and civilians alike, attempting to drive the elongated stinger into their necks before latching onto the face (or helm) with their six claw-like legs.

As it turns out, it doesn’t take much to sow chaos among the traffic around and the guards on the eastern bridge. The aforementioned lumberjack decides that he values his life considerably more than he values the ox, the wagon, and the logs on it, and as such, opts to abandon his cart to hoof it as quickly as he possibly can across the bridge toward Isra.
This has the side effect of leaving his ox, panicked as it is due to the swarm buzzing about, without any sort of guidance. The ox then decides that it values its life over the wagon and the logs, and opts to buck the wagon off its back and start running in no particular direction.
This, then, causes the wagon to tip over, and the logs contained therein to spill out and tumble out all across the bridge, inhibiting the frenzied movement of others, bowling a few travelers over, and adding to the state of chaos. The travelers, merchants, and traffic across the bridge have decided unanimously that they would no longer like to be where they are, would instead like to be somewhere far from this swarm, and will exercise all available expediency, even at the expense of others, to get there.
Meanwhile, the guards on hand, as outnumbered as they are, attempt to do what they can. The aforementioned crossbows are put to use, shooting bolts into the swarm about as quickly as they’re able to. The speed with which the creatures are moving makes aiming for any particular one an effective impossibility, but it is the hope of the panicked guards that due to the sheer density of the creatures, their bolts will find a mark. Those guards without crossbows take to the creatures with their bladed weapons, mostly spears, and pikes. Whichever, if any of the things come within their reach, they stab and swipe towards, hoping that they are as fragile as they seem. (And, despite their duty, a few of the guard can be seen among the fleeing, apparently without the courage to hold their ground and defend anything in particular.)
Speaking generally, all of this creates a scene of confusion, characterized by the yelling of people scared for their lives, their frenzied footfalls as they try to escape across the bridge back toward Isra. Some die. Some are not quick enough, some are just unlucky, but all their screams only add to the chaos, to the fear. There is no semblance of order to be found, no solace to be found save for in death or in the waters below the bridge, into which some have jumped, and some have been pushed. At the very least, the bridge itself, having been built well, recently, doesn’t seem to particularly mind all of the feet hammering upon it, or the blood being spilled upon it; it will not fall today. So there’s that.

The terror bugs continued their onslaught, some making radical attempts of murder with the mindless frenzy of a hive, but mostly zipping about in erratic flight patterns from surface to surface. While alarmed, their deadly attacks as a group were not particularly targeted. Yet their sheer speed and unpredictability would magnify a weakness to most crossbows - their rates of fire, making the pike a most formidable weapon on site for the defenders. Disgustingly chitinous and frighteningly real, several would be confirmed dead as they were shot through the thorax by quarrels or literally cut from the air, their crushed wings, legs, and gloppy tan hemolymph littering their sites of death. Each loss of their species, however, served only to frenzy the swarm even more. While they did not give chase to any who fled the scene, those who remained would find the invaders' resolve to cause chaos only escalate. While those who had leaped from the bridge would escape the creatures temporarily, they'd find themselves exposed again once they came up for air. Still, with the current of the water, such a method of escape had better odds of survival should they manage to escape whatever cold, inhuman targeting mechanism that lent their stingers excellent accuracy...

Kaylie and her cohort of soldiers, accompanied by Ambicat Guess, Silas, Hiyama, and of course her loyal wolf companion, Cael, came at a run, even the hardened Sun Marshal stopping in shock for a few moments at the carnage, before the sounds reached them, carried by the winds, an awful buzzing noise accompanied by the screams of civilians and guards alike. The horrific noises galvanizing her into action and she sprinted forward, already nocking an arrow to her bow, Cael loping alongside her. "Focus on getting the civilians out of harm's way!" She shouted at the accompanying guards, they were outnumbered, but not by enough that they couldn't delay. "The rest of us will hold them off while you do that." Hopefully the people with her were competent, she mused as she sent her first arrow of the day smashing into one of the bugs.

Much time would elapse between the initial attack and the arrival of Kaylie. By this time pretty much all who had fled the creatures were long gone, and the invaders did not give chase. Most of the insects were now gone, only a few stragglers remaining in a horrifying scene of dead bodies that none yet had the opportunity to retrieve. A search for hiding survivors and clearing out the remaining insects was certainly in order, and the job would be much easier for the responders now that the swarm had mostly left and was no longer in attack mode. Kaylie's arrow flew true, pegging one to its surface with deadly accuracy. A few then took off in a flurry then, most retreating to the misty area of woods from which they came.

Upon arriving in at the eastern bridges, Ambicat freezes as he gazes out over the sea of carnage before him.
“Threads of life,” he says in disbelief, stopping to hold back the urge to vomit, “What happened here?” Who…”
Ambicat’s next question appears to be answered for him as he gazes as he notices the remainder of the swarm of insects departing.
“Holy shit…” he murmurs, beginning to quake a little. He stops himself after a little while, however, taking a deep breath to calm himself. He couldn’t afford to panic now, he had to try to help anyone who was still alive. He shuts his eyes, and begins to focus in on the world around him. When he opens them again, the world (as it is normally seen) has been replaced by an inky void. Threads of various colored light have now replaced the physical forms of everything (living or dead), and blue threads of energy now hover in the air around him. To anyone else, Ambicat’s eyes have gone pure white, although nothing else about him seems to have change.
To Ambicat, the strands of light that make up the figures scattered around the field appear to bear a color that he had never seen in the regular world, and had never heard a name for. What is more relevant to Ambicat, however, is the fact that those people who have died seem to bear a significantly darker sheen to those who are still alive. By scanning over those people lying on the ground, Ambicat is able to identify which among them still retain some semblance of life. Trusting in Kaylie and the guards to keep any stragglers off of him, Ambicat begins running to those who he can still tell are alive. Assuming he reaches them without issue, Ambicat would drag any survivors he finds behind the line of guards, and would then run off to find more. As he does so, Ambicat also begins pointing out any other survivors he spots to his allies.
“There’s one over there,” he calls, his voice sounding distant, as if it is not coming from the gnome, “Get them over behind the guards,”

"Holy shit." Silas and Ambicat Guess seemed to be of like minds. As the little man jumped into action Silas decided to follow his lead. First thing he did was take a spear from a fallen soldier. Relying on Ambicat's commands Silas began helping survivors to the safety of the guard. As he worked he scanned the area for bugs. Most of them had gone. He asked one of the other mercenaries, "Think we could catch one alive?"

Hiyama remains silent. Still slightly behind the others, he stops at the scene of the carnage. He had seen many things in his travels, but never something like this. One would think that if such a species were not new to the region, he and many others would know about it already. His mind was primarily fixated on their origin. How many more were there, and would they come back? As the others fanned out to search for survivors and more creatures, it may be likely that some of the remaining creatures would fly off at slow intervals to rejoin their swarm. If such were the case, he might see one flying into the distance... his eyes would follow it, before it may seem to vanish into the misty treeline in the distance. "There..." he would whisper under his breath. Regardless of whether he'd have such an opportunity to witness a creature's flight, he'd still approach a guard, any who might look shaken as though they were present during the attack. His voice was quiet and reserved, with just the slightest hint of concern.
"Did you or anyone else see where they came from?"

The guard Hiyama approaches would seem to be a young man perhaps only just old enough to be a member of the guard. Beyond shaken, he is in considerable distress, standing very still and staring at the wounded and dead around him. As he turns his face to look at Hiyama, he's very pale.
He raises one hand shakily and points to the southeast. Across the bridge, across the hills, toward the forest that borders the plains.
"The forest," he says. "They came from the direction of the forest."
He moves to point at a few of the stragglers which are still visible, "See?"

Indeed, those creatures remaining slowly flew off as people came to counter-invade, joining the rest of them in a flight that was undoubtedly in the direction of the distant, misty treeline... Specifically, the creatures seemed to favor a small pass between two far off hills, across which the edge of the woods ran.

In his current state, Ambicat would be unable to hear anyone else very clearly, although he would be very grateful when he noticed Silas helping to rescue the survivors. For the next hour or so, the gnome would continue searching for survivors in the area. If they could still walk, he would direct them to the guards. If they were not, however, the little 3-foot man would attempt to drag them to the area behind the line of guards. Considering that most of those who had been wounded were probably close to twice Ambicat’s size, this would probably have required the help of some of the other mercenaries and guards.
Once he had gathered up as many survivors as he could find, Ambicat would walk over to the gathering point. Gazing at the small crowd of wounded and terrified people, Ambicat would shut his eyes, and stretch his hands into the air. Taking a deep breath, Ambicat’s hands would begin to glow faintly, as he started to draw threads of energy out of the air around him. These threads would begin to gather around Ambicat, and any onlooker would begin to see the air around him radiate a faint blue light as the gnome continued to move his arms. This would continue for several minutes, during which time a thick layer of sweat would begin to form on Ambicat. After that time, Ambicat would open his eyes, and stretch one hand out towards the gathered crowd.
At this point, any onlooker would be able to see the blue light that had coalesced around the gnome follow his hand and spread out to the crowd. With another deep breath, Ambicat’s hands would begin moving again, as the gnome began to weave the threads of energy into the many forms of the injured crowd. To the people gathered in the crowd– as well as to a few of the guards in the immediate area – it would look like the blue light was literally entering their bodies. Immediately, anyone within the crowd who had open wounds would notice the bleeding begin to stop, while others would notice any sort of pain they had been feeling begin to subside.
His job done, Ambicat would close his eyes once more. Once he opens them again, his eyes would have reverted back to their normal state. Dropping to one knee, Ambicat would begin trying to catch his breath. He hoped that what he had done would be enough. While his magic had not been able to fully heal any of the people in the crowd, he figured that it wouldkeep their conditions from worsening before they could be brought to a better healer. Figuring that he had done what he could for now, Ambicat would turn his head to his companions and the guards.
“Did anyone… huff… did anyone manage to see where those other bugs wandered off to?” he manages to ask between breaths of air.

"They went off into the woods, right between those hills there..." she replied, as she took up a post between two blood-soaked battlements to watch the swarm disappear into the mist-covered woods.
"Cowardly sons of bitches..." she muttered

"I think we should," Hiyama responded to Silas, contributing to a consensus that something had to be done and this is why they were called. He knew Isra's army was deployed out abroad in the lands of the south, and that they needed some help scoping out the situation. "Though it may be hard to see in that fog."
