A great wall was build from logs and pitch. It joined the White City's western wall and formed a semi-circle around the western gate. A large double gate made of iron was installed in the wall. it was aligned with the city gate and only opened inward, toward the White City. Walkways along the top of this allowed archers and mages clear line of sights upon the enemy. This was doubled three times over allowing forces to fall back should the first, second, third, or fourth wall become overwhelmed.
While reinforced heavily the walls could easily be torn down from the outside. This was the best Aaedan could muster in so little time.

The Queen stood a top the walkway crossing the metal gates of the first wall. The siege had gone on for days. Undead would come but the use of pitch and fire grenades would send them back into the city. But they were running low on these supplies. When they ran out the fight would become an unending melee against the undead that could only be destroyed by fire.
A fire wall of pitch keep the dead at bay for now. They could be seen skulking about inside the city behind the wall of fire.
The queen had her great sword, holing it upside down, leaning on it as a if it was a staff. Her use of magic over the past several days had left the queen exhausted and clearing the undead out so a firewall could be placed had taken its toll.

Luckily the queen was about to get some relief. On the horizon there came a large group of mounted soldiers, and a banner of the Land-Tiller's state. About 300 hundred animals were present, mostly horses and wildebeests, and some rhinos.
The troops had the following composition:
There were approximately 100 mounted mages and 100 mounted archers. The mages had large staffs from which glowed lights of various colors, creating a sparkling appearance on the horizon. The archers each had two kinds of bows, short and long, for short and long range combat.
There were about a dozen earth mages, each accompanied by a powerful earth titan.
There were about three dozen psionic corp members, sharing mounts or riding on the earth titans. They were already preparing to cast psionic and defensive spells.
There were about 100 falconers, sharing mounts as they channel mana for spells which they would coordinate with their falcons.
There were about 50 heavily armed knights on horseback with scale mail for the horses. These were from the Knights of the Harvest.
The latest addition to the Land-tiller's forces were the wyvern riders, a mix of mages and archers riding on the backs of small, intelligent wyverns. There were only a handful of these, as they were an experimental force which had not been battle tested. These could be seen soaring above. Some of them had people with staffs which glowed softly in the sky.
Finally, leading the pack, was Raynor of the Celadine, leader of the mounted mages and a fairly powerful fire mage in his own right.
After several minutes their forces would arrive near enough so that Queen Nyx could here Raynor when he called out "Looks like you guys need some back-up!"
(I didn't do the math exactly but there are about 4,000 NPC slots worth of troops represented here.)

Post by Ralakor Overlord of Belrow on May 9, 2016 18:23:05 GMT -8
In the darkness of the night a sound could be heard in the far distance. The sounds of thousands of feet marching in unison. At first all that could be seen was two faint green lights in the fair distance. These lights soon got larger and larger and shapes began to form. Two massive pyramid structures moved towards the city. On lookers would slowly see that other shapes where beginning to form in front of these massive black monoliths. Five neat blocks of Soldiers wearing armor of bright bronze, wielding pikes and swords of blazing green fire they marched as one, silent as the night. Each block contained over one thousand Guardians, all marching in perfect silence, not even the sound of moving armor could be heard. Yet the greatest surprise could be seen when they got within telescopic range. For everyone of these soldiers were dead. Flesh dried as a husk, with empty eye sockets and exposed teeth their armor to large for their now shrunken flesh. At the head of this undead army walked a being of immense size, floating across the land by means of ethereal energy he lead them all towards the city under siege. From the barricades a voice was heard in the heads of all the defenders. "I am Overlord Ralakor of Belrow. The nation of the dead. Long ago, we where forced to destroy the living. We shall not allow this to pass again. No more lives will be lost because of the evil use of the dead. No more innocent blood spilt."

From her post atop the fortifications she saw the Land Tillers first. As she had been fighting with cavalry for sometime she was impressed by their force. She responed to Raynor, "Aye, and it is most welcome. We have managed to hold the undead back but it was only a matter of time before they overwhelmed us. Your timing couldn't have been better."
At this point a soldier came and whispered in the Queen's ear. The news troubled her greatly. She marched quickly from her post and went to meet this new undead arriving.

The rear guard of the 3rd Legion quickly formed a defensive line against the approaching forces of Berlow. With their city having been taken by undead, the soldiers saw these new forces as more enemies and were readying for a fight they would surely loose. When the leader of their army spoke the forces of the 3rd made no reply. They would wait for the queen.

They would not have to wait long. Nyx arrived very hastily. She had heard the words of Ralakor but she knew her soldiers would still be mistrusting against them. She broke through the 3rd Legion's lines and greeted the undead herself. "I am Nyx Mann, Queen of Aaedan. If you truly seek to help put down the evil in our home, you are welcome. My soldiers are wary of your kind, as they have been fighting undead for days. Forgive them for their mistrust."

Thunder boomed overhead, the tower of Aeon itself had begun to glow a brilliant green, as though reacting to these newcomers. A beam of green light shot from the top of the tower into the clouds above the city and they turned dark, a hazy green weaving through them.
A force of Undead Aaedanians had formed inside the city. A genuine formation of soldiers. They had been waiting for the wall of fire to burn out and the time was now. 10 lines of 10 men shoulder to shoulder marched from the city to attack the walls. Not only that but high on the walls undead Aaedanians appeared and began to fire arrows at any soldier they could.
The undead had changed, grown more intelligent. They were now doing as the Aaedanians would in a siege against their city. Pelt their foes with arrows and send a force to crush them.

It is our punishment that we are to be untrusted by the living. We do not hold it against you. Our cities are only now rising from the sands in the south. Our arrival has surprised many. Now, please, allow us to do what must be done. We shall not attack your men, you must only allow us passage into your city. We shall form a vanguard. We can not be changed, nor do we feel pain or fear. We shall clear a path through the cursed. From the ground and below." At that moment the very ground shook like an earthquake was happening. The ground to the left of the undead army began to shake and give way. Leading to a massive mechanical creature rising from the earth. It was shaped like a giant worm, several meters in diameter its mouth full of bright, razor sharp teeth. It then began to dive again in to the earth, leaving a giant hole. One of the thousand men blocks broke off, and began to walk slowly down into the dark hole that was left by the giant worm. "Let us begin making amends for our past." Stated Ralakor as he began to glow with great green ethereal power, rising from the earth even more so. His body began to change, warp. Growing larger enveloping in a dark shadowy cloak. Once more all could hear a voice in their head. "To those that use the resting dead to fulfill their wicked deeds. We are your death. I shall reap the very soul from your body.

Perhaps to Nyx's surprise, the Land-Tillers would immediately rush to the defense of the undead forces commanded by Ralakor. It was an ironic twist of fate that the Land-Tiller's State had formed an alliance with these benevolent undead. The Land-Tillers would provide a distraction while the massive mechanical worm did its job.
The first to respond to the undead troop movements would be the wyvern corps. With their aerial view, they could see the undead beginning to march while also starting to position undead archers along the walls.
The initial volley might take out a few soldiers, but with the help of half the psionic corps, the wyvern corps' intelligence would be transmitted to the rest of the Land-Tillers, causing them to make a temporary retreat just to stay out of range of their shots, before pulling out their long bows and returning fire.
Most of the mounted archer corps could wield longbows with draw weights in excess of a hundred pounds, some even going as high as 150 pounds. Their accurate range was anywhere from 300 to 400 meters.
The wyvern corps themselves also had vastly superior reach due to their altitude and would help snipe the archers from above.
The other half of the psionic corps dedicated themselves to defensive spells to help sway the archer vs archer battle more to their side. Raynor himself would begin channeling healing and defensive spells to prevent loss of life this early in the battle.
The objective wasn't necessarily to kill the undead. Thanks to Ralakor's training and their own past experiences, the Land-Tillers knew that arrows wouldn't be able to kill the undead, but they could at least temporarily cripple them. Shots from 100 lb draw weight bows could penetrate steel armor if necessary, and could send a being made of nothing but bones flying back several meters, causing them to land right on their bare spines, should they connect. Strikes to the limbs could blow the limbs clean off. A good sternum or spine strike could cut an undead in half.
Meanwhile, the falcon corps were done charging their mana and were having their falcons place a large number of magical runes on the ground and in the air behind their own forces as part of their fail safe strategy. The mounted mages and wyvern mages continued to gather power for the Land-Tiller's primary offensive while letting the archers, psionic corps, and Raynor do their work. The undead could expect a nasty surprise as soon as the walls collapsed.
The Earth titans started to lumber towards the front line, their casters dismounting them and remaining further back, while the Knights of the Harvest began to flank out towards the sides...

The twang of rangers releasing their arrows back at the undead, the explosions of arrows enchanted to erupt with fire, the sound of steel on steel, the cries of the undead and the screams of men fighting at the gates, and rumbling thunder of the sky drowned echoed through the night. "Ralakor, wait. The city was built by magic the walls are solid granite and go deeper than we could ever know. Unless your beast can cut through mountains, it won't work. If you truly wish to enter our city, do so through the gate. Not as an invader but as an ally of Aaedan. I will spearhead our entry, bring your undead behind us and spread throughout the city. My men and I will go and capture the palace, and the White Tower." She looked to the Land Tiller, "Use your air force to support the men who enter the city. Your cavalry will be at huge disadvantage inside the city, keep them out here. If the undead have suddenly gotten smart enough to use their bows and some military tactics then they may be smart enough to unlock the other gates and send forces to box us in. Stop them if they do." The queen would begin charging her great sword with energy. She turned and walked away from the leaders. If Ralakor's monsters could eat through the walls beneath the ground then all the better. She walked through her men, soldiers raising shields to protect themselves and their queen from arrows. When she neared the gates she shouted orders to her men. It was inaudible to the other leaders. The majority of the 3rd Legion would form up. Lines of 10 men shoulder to shoulder. The queen at its front, two nights on either side of her with large shields. She turned to face her soldiers. "Aaedanians! So long have fought alone. So long have we thought ourselves better than the rest of the world. Hiding in isolation for centuries! But here we are! Fighting to take back our own city from our people turned dead. This fight could not have been won. Not by Aaedanian hands alone. Now, in our greatest time of need we have ever known, these people have come to help us. Show them we are worthy of their aid! Show them were are worthy of their friendship!" She raised he sword above her head, its magic charged and flowing through the blade making it glow white hot and sending sparks of lightning out of its edge. "For Aaedan!" Her men drew blade and answered back in unision, "FOR AAEDAN!"

Her country was in danger, and there were corpses walking around. That wasn't right. The storm brewing overhead was growing in size. Soon the city-state and all its territories would be covered by the foul weather.
The Aaedanian undead continued to fire their bows into the living's ranks. A ballistae fired at one of the wyvern rider of the Land-Tillers. Its bolt flying like a bullet through the air, screaming as it soared.
An undead mage graced the walls of the city and began chanting.
A force of knights in tight formation rushed from the city gates to crush any living with the fortifications inner wall. It would slam head on into a phalanx of the 3rd Legion.
Inside the city, unknown to the living and their allies, larger formations undead were forming. Eyes glowing bright and weapons ready. The undead was preparing for the City's invasion. Some intelligence was at work. The dead knew the living had the forces to enter the city.
All the while the Living Aaedanians and their allies attacks found little purchase save for those that immolated the undead.
Arrows would indeed stun the monsters, the metal and wood ripping through flesh and bone, but unless their heads were severed of they were set ablaze the undead would persevere through the attacks.

"Yes your eminence!" Raynor relayed the orders to the Psionic corps, who in turn relayed them to the rest of the forces.
Whatever archers could be spared, as well as the Knights of the Harvest on one of the flanks, immediately moved to intercept the knights threatening the Legion's left flank. They were followed by an earth titan who moved with great strides, causing the ground to shake with each step.
The remaining titans and the bulk of the Land-Tiller forces would spread out more thinly to cover the gate entrances.
As instructed, the wyverns would move to cover the friendly undead as they tried to enter the city. The mages and archers would carefully aim to not hit the friendly undead, but only the enemy undead. Of course the mages would use the fire magic they had been building up at the start of the battle.
The ballista bolt happened to fire at one of the wyvern mages, who had been charging her magic this whole time. Her built up fire spell would be enough to overwhelm the ballista bolt and continue on its path, setting the ballista on fire.
Fully charged, the mage corps began to move. Under the cover fire of the archer corps and even as they spread out, the mages began to unleash their spells that they had been charging since the beginning of the battle. The mages best at earth magic released clouds of an invisible gas up and over the walls. The mages best at wind magic would summon breezes to increase the oxygen levels and also help the clouds of gas travel further beyond the walls, into the ranks of undead which were preparing to take the walls down. And finally, most importantly, the mages who exceeded at fire magic would light the spark...
A rolling wave of brilliant blue flames, extending across the entire Land-Tiller battle line, would flow up and over the walls, incinerating any undead they came in contact with, and would continue to flow passed the wall and into the ranks of undead.
The falcon corps, done laying their runes, would start to cast spells to empower their falcons for more direct combat...

The falcon corps, done laying their runes, would start to cast spells to empower their falcons for more direct combat... PS: I screwed up. After consulting a mod... my NPC count here is more like 8,000. But I'm gonna roll with it. With the walls cleared, at least temporarily, the fortification's gates would open. Queen Nyx Mann would march forward, all of Aaedan's surviving might at her back, and the might of Berlow at theirs. He great sword glowed bright ready to unleash its lightning and clear their entry into the city. As the Queen approached the west gate of the White City, she would raise her sword and order the phalanx that was holding against this newest wave of undead to, "MAKE WAY!" An order they understood well. They would quickly break their phalanx and escape the blow. The undead in the gate were not as lucky. They were in a tunnel with no escape. The Nyx brought her blade down and blast of lightning erupted toward the undead with such ferocity that none were left in its wake. "FORWARD MARCH!!" She commanded. And the Aaedanian's began to march into the city.

The forces of Belrow took the blunt of the attack. Acting as a unliving shield wall for the archers and mages of the Land Tiller State they where able to drive back the undead attacks. Dozens of bronze armored dead created impenetrable lines of enchanted pikes and shields. The enemy undead hurled themselves against sharpened pikes, impaling themselves. As their bodies touched the glowing green blades the evil dead began to shudder and jerk as great bursts of energy coursed through their bodies. It would be enough to electrocute a living enemy. Instead it only stunned them the electrical currents freezing their muscles. Only blows that destroyed their bodies completely could end the bronze dead.
The great black pyramids finally reached the edge of the city walls. Here there true power was finally realized. Lifting themselves on ethereal magic over the walls they began to slowly shoot down massive bursts of green magical bolts from the massive crystal at its peak. They concentrated their firepower on the long range supporting elements, the ballista and mages of the dead, incinerating them to ash with each strike of the massive bolts.
The greatest of all the sights came from Ralakor himself. Transformed by ancient magic he strode through the battle field over ten feet high. Swinging his shadowy scythe through waiting dead. As the blade touched their flesh, their bodies simply dissolved into shadowy wisps, their screams of anguish the last thing that was heard. Striding through choke points he was death incarnate, the undead weapons causing little damage, their bites ineffective against the already dead.

She has platinum blonde hair, usually tied in a ponytail to fit inside her helmet. Her eyes are a vibrant shade of green that contrasts well with her tanned skin. Clothes and Equipment: Liz wears a normal looking set of plate armor that is custom fitted for her specifically, and does not hide her gender. She wields a lance when mounted. Javelins are carried in her mounts saddle. Her mount is a young Griffin by the name of St. George, he is full grown in height, but does not yet have the full mass of a adult griffin. She wears plain clothes when not in armor and her shield bears the symbol of the Dawn Riders on it, and her breastplate bears the symbol of Isra on it. She wears a small necklace with a purple gemstone on it underneath her breastplate, only visible when she she is unarmored. Her sword has the insignia of the midnight sun engraved in the hilt, as it is relatively out of sight and does not violate the military dress code. Her primary weapon is her sword, an ancient Elven artifact passed down by her bloodline. It is wreathed in green lightning when unsheathed and wielded by her, and she has a sunmetal shield that complements it with magical abilities of its own.

"Really? I had not expected that from a brand new Queen who was so young, but I do not object to a fight!"
In the distance she saw the remainder of 1st Company approaching hard on horseback. They were to begin to establish a forward base camp in a safe location. The location was already marked on their maps.
"No better way to figure out what the situation is then experiencing it first hand!"
1st Company's Riders took off after their General, and the two dozen Riders sped towards the besieged city. They would first seek to find the Queen from above then offer whatever assistance they could.
