Alone in the shifting sands of the desert, the Ashen Tower's dig site was a tiny, resolute speck of civilization. Here ages ago a garrison had stood, securing a strategically important watering hole. Now only the oasis remained, the fort lost to the sands. Mostly. On the edge of the Oasis a scattered mass of white canvas tents had sprung up, the temporary dwellings of workers and researchers. It was believed that the site of an ancient battle had been discovered: a truly unique archaeological find.

Ralf casually strolled through the encampment; just a mass of white tents, now covered in the sand of the Valheecius desert. This place was hot - very hot - and despite spending time here for over a month, Ralf had not grown accustomed to it. He stripped himself of most of his armor, and loosened his Ki'gar so it was almost just simply hanging loosely around his neck rather than being tied. He carried his sword, and his enchanted shield, a gift from Hirhan himself.
"Oh me," he sighed, walking into a nearby tent to fetch to water.

Sweat dripped off of Hirhan's back as he dropped his bag onto the cot. The desert was remarkably hot. Back in Phoenix he had grown used to the amenities of the city. But out here...
Using magic to cool himself was tempting, but he knew better. In the desert danger could be lurking seconds away: a poisonous scorpion, raiders... Yes, that reminded him. The mercenaries would be arriving soon.
"RALF." He hollered to summon his friend. When the man arrived he would show him into his tent, leaving the flap open. The Varan warrior was truly a fish out of water here: whatever he was experiencing the northern warrior must have felt several time over.
"The mercenaries I hired to help us investigate the ruins were spotted to the west. Or, I think they are the mercs: certainly they are better dressed than the usual raiders! Now, let us go. I have been itching to get into the battle site! Just think of all those ancient relics."
The magus's face was transparently excited.

Ralf immediately made his way to Hirhan's tent. "Yes, my friend," he asked. Hirhan went on to explain the possible arrival of the new mercenaries he had recently hired. "Alright, fine, fine," Ralf said eagerly, nodding his head, and standing upright to hide any sign of fatigue the desert heat may have been giving him. "Let us go."
Ralf would follow Hirhan to the spot. He would stand upright, with arms crossed, a stoic demeanor on his face, to show the newcomers that was Hirhan's personal bodyguard-of-sorts.

Robert and his caravan roll into the dig site. A porter turns to Robert.
"Sir, what are we doing here? I thought we were going to sell to the locals. These aren't locals. And we were in a frozen tundra just a little while ago. How did we get here?"
Robert turns, giving the porter a blindingly shiny smile.
"You have no vision, Jenkins! What would the locals of the tundra give us? Ice? Fish? No! They don't need our goods! They've lived their lives without them! Do bring them foreign luxuries would destroy their lovely culture, which has been the same for thousands of years! But these guys? Oh no. These archeologists have lived in cities, and are used to comfort and some degree of luxury! My goods will sell like hot cakes! Actually, I have some hot cakes to sell! And they can pay in gold, or whatever they dig up! You have to know your market, Jenkins!"
Now would not be a good time to tell them I'm totally lost, he thinks to himself.

Rani emerged from a tent where she had been changing out of her old clothes and into her new ones! She was now dressed in clothing like that of a belly dancer or a genie with a veil and everything. She of course also had her Flameburst Gauntlet equipped. The desert was another new terrain she'd never seen, it was hot but she was comfortable. She came here to learn new things and to help out Hirhan whom she'd traveled with in the past, Ralf was also there so it was nice to be around 2 people she knew.
Rani walks around the camp.

Raena Fletcher

Roleplay posts: 152
Age: 26
Physical Description: Standing at a height of six feet one inch, Raena Fletcher is a tall, very well-built young woman. Her skin is fairly pale, yet has a slight lively glow, and she has pale blue eyes that speak of a world weariness far beyond her age. Her snow white hair is always cut at about shoulder-length, silky and flowing and always well-kept despite her otherwise Spartan nature. She has full, though never painted lips, hardly ever seeming to turn up in a smile anymore. She has a long, deep scar running up from the bottom of her left jawline to the middle of her left cheek, marring her otherwise unblemished skin. Beneath her right eye, a tattoo in the shape of a fleur de lis has been inked. It looks almost ritual in nature, but its origins are as yet unknown.
================================
Clothes and Equipment: Over her travels, Raena has collected many pieces of heavy armour from her fallen foes and allies alike, melting it down and reforging it into a suit of plate maille unique to her and incredibly sturdy and heavy. The suit is stained forest green with bronze trim, a design embezzled in bronze on both pauldrons, one of a fleur de lis and the other a diving raven. Her bronze gorget has been shaped into the shape of a skull. In addition, a tattered orange-brown cloak wraps around her figure, obscuring her form in battle as well as adding an element of humility to her otherwise splendid armour. She does not tend to wear a helmet into battle, preferring the widest field of view as she can get.
As for armament, she tends to use a heavy enchanted two-handed flamberge sheathed upon her back as her primary weapon, with a short gladius and buckler as a backup. Finally, she carries a set of throwing knives within her cloak, and she's fairly proficient at aiming with them.
Outside of battle, she tends to wear simple linen clothing, preferring function and comfort over form. She hardly ever wears shoes outside her armour, either, having developed well-callused and strong feet to match her hands as a result.

Compared to the other new arrivals, Raena and her companion appear to be unassuming, Raena at least traveling relatively light, garbed in only a bleached cloth shirt with the arms torn off and a pair of dark linen baggy trousers. She even lacks footwear. As she enters the camp upon the back of her faithful camel, her pale blue eyes slowly scan the area, her hand moving to her face to brush aside a strand of hair blown astray by the hot siroccos. She turns to Wendy who rides behind her, saying, "The Order wanted us to check this place out first. It seems a somewhat...unprofitable place for mercenary work, but the surface is not always indicative of what lies beneath. Perhaps we will be surprised."
Luckily, she doesn't hear the name 'Fletcher' being called out, her focus currently entirely upon her objective. "Let us go find this 'Hirhan' person, then, shall we?" she asks aside to Wendy, turning her lips up in a small smile toward her companion.

Hirhan would exit his tent with Ralf, smoothing back his hair as he exited. Oh to the hells with it. He drew the water off his brow with a brief utterance. Loathe to waste the moisture her purified the sweat before challenging it into his canteen. At least he would appear unperturbed by the weather for a few moments.
He spotted two groups entering the camp. First came the merchants, who clearly were making some profit off his less frugal colleagues judging by the quantity of money changing hands. He had more important matters to attend to.
He and Ralf would find Raena and Wendy near the edge of the camp. One was clearly a warrior of some type, but the drow woman... she pegged him as a fellow spellcaster. He wasn't wearing his lenses at the moment, so it was currently impossible to tell for certain. He would great them in a cheery manner.
"Ahem. I take you are the mercenaries we commissioned from the Order of the Hammer? I am the Magus Hirhan, and this is my loyal friend and bodyguard Ralf Valgard. Welcome to my dig site!"
His eyes shone with glee.
"Now, it is HOT out here, let me tell you! Why don't we seek out some shade?"
He would motion toward a nearby veranda made of white canvas sheets held in the air by poles. Guide wires held the structure in place. There were some benches there to sit on. As they walked he would continue to blather on, speaking at a breakneck pace.
"We are at an exciting stage in the excavations. So exciting the academy decided it would be wise to take on more guards! Our workers have uncovered the sealed entrance into an ancient stronghold, along with the site of a battle that occurred on the dunes nearby. We haven't gotten that far in, but already we have found artifacts that are reminiscent of those used by the ancient worshipers of the fiery serpent- the progenitors of Serpent cult operating in Ivelius today."
Reaching the benches he would take a seat, leaving the other spaces open for Ralf and the newcomers.

Raena dismounts the camel and calls a nearby stable boy over to tie it up for her before wordlessly following behind Hirhan, her bare feet sinking into the burning sand. She looks up at the sky, shielding her eyes as she internally curses the sun. It was indeed hot. Miraculously, over the weeks she's been in the desert, she has not burned, although she has acquired a warm sun-touched glow, her skin having turned golden rather than pale white, causing a striking contrast with her fair hair and eyes. She thanks her god for the protection; sun burns can be a nasty inhibition during a battle if they get too bad, particularly with the weight of armour pressing down upon them.
She looks back down as Hirhan continues to speak, obligingly taking a seat opposite him as she listens intently, nodding her head slowly. Once he's finished, she asks, "What sort of dangers are we expecting to guard against? I am sure you know The Order's policy on secrecy in its contracts. I expect you to be up front about what dangers we face, knowing that we will not shirk from our job, no matter how perilous. The Order appreciates your honesty." Her voice is flat and businesslike, and it sounds rehearsed.

Before he took his seat Hirhan would answer Wendy's question with a sheepish grin.
"An artifact? Oh heavens no, those belong in museums and academy labs! Have no fear though, if magical loot is what you are after then you are going to appreciate the payment I negotiated with your order."
After Raena's question he would raise his right hand, scratching the back of his head absently.
"Oh dear, if only I knew! Who knows what kind of ancient dangers we might unearth!"
He still was smiling. Evidently even the prospect of ancient enemies excited his intellectual curiosity.
"That said, out here in the desert there is always the constant of raiders and the like. Mostly human, poorly equipped, and trained in guerrilla warfare but little else. These should be kept from the dig sites at all costs. I'm sure you are up to that task.
Now, as for you payment... I was told your order is professional, and that your high fee is in itself indicative of your competency, excetera. After some frankly laborious negotiations with your boss, I settled on the following: firstly, a nominal fee will be provided to the order itself. This was done weeks ago. Secondly, to pay the mercenaries themselves, an offer shall be made: I will personally enchant a single piece of gear for each of mercenary who arrived, or offer them the value of an enchantment in gold according to the regular prices of having such an enchantment grafted. The only stipulation being that you not take anything you find on the dig sites for yourselves, and that the enchantments themselves must take more than a few days of my time to create. After all, I will be busy once excavations get underway!"
So, what do you say? Are these terms acceptable?

Ralf walks alongside Hirhan and remains ever vigilant beside his friend. Raena struck him as a notable warrior, and had instant-respect for the woman. Wandy, on the other hand, seemed a little alien to him, much like Rani. When the group takes a seat at the bench, Ralf remains standing, arms still crossed and stoic as ever.
Raena asked a worthy question, about what dangers one would face on this undertaking, something Ralf was very eager to hear answer. He nodded at Raena to show he respected her warrior-like style, and for her sensible question.

Wendamari sighed.
"Fiiiiiine. I'll leave those amazing relics where they are...." She said while pouting. After hearing the rewards she changed her attitude.
"Wait, enchant a weapon of you choice...." She said. Soon after she grabbed a necklace she was wearing and took it off. On the end of it was a tiny sword, a saber designed for someone only standing a foot in height.
"Could you enchant this weapon to be big enough for me to use without losing its strength or sharpness?" She asked, showing the sword to Hirhan.

"A tiny sword?"
He reached into his bag, retrieving a strange looking pair of spectacles. Various lenses could be moved on and off of the main lenses, and a dial on one of the lenses appeared to allow him to sharpen his long or short distance vision. Bending forward he began to turn some of the dials and flick through various lenses.
"Yes, I think I can do that. This is fantastic metalworking, by the way. So sharp, but so small! I also see it is already carrying a fairly strong enchantment. Was this a fae warrior's sword? The blade pattern is reminiscent of... while he examined the saber in his right hand, his left hand had already gone to his bag, retrieving a leather-bound book. With the stroke of a finger he flicked through the pages in a blur, stopping suddenly by pressing his finger.
Did he even look at the pages?
It was only then that he turned his attention to the book.
"Oh drat, I was wrong! The blade pattern IS identical to those employed by the human smiths... Now I am truly confused. What a little mystery! But yes, I could manage that. The blade still has some room to improve on, and I am quite good at wringing every last drop of potential out of a piece.

"It's....it was my grandmother's saber. She gave it to me as a good luck charm, but it has an enchant on it that makes it easier to block attacks. I know a little bit of sword fighting, I figure I could use it and be like her. I'm....not too familiar with the origins of it, but I think she got a human to craft it for her, since she lived in the middle of nowhere most of her life."

Raena Fletcher
Dedicated
================================

Raena refrains from mentioning that Wendy is not, in fact, part of the Order as she nods her head and thinks for a moment, before answering, "You could enchant my armour to make it more durable against attacks of a physical nature. That would be very helpful." She acknowledges Ralf's greeting with a half-smile, before returning her gaze to Hirhan, awaiting a response.
