Wendy looked up but looked embarrassed. "Oh, uh...I'm a....drow." She said with some hesitance. She gave the woman another look and lit up again. "Oh wow, a jungle troll! Hey, I think my grandma killed a few of you! Uh, n-not that I'd do that to you, or anything...." "I neva heard of a Drow. And don't worry about a ting, if any of dem were my ancestors I'm sure dey didn't mind dyin in battle. My ancestors killed many troll themselves." Rani closed her eyes and a smile could be seen through her veil.

Raena refrains from mentioning that Wendy is not, in fact, part of the Order as she nods her head and thinks for a moment, before answering, "You could enchant my armour to make it more durable against attacks of a physical nature. That would be very helpful." She acknowledges Ralf's greeting with a half-smile, before returning her gaze to Hirhan, awaiting a response. "That would be easily accomplished, though I think I can do better. I appreciate a challenge. Well then, it is settled. Now, the midday sun is almost past, and the workers are waiting. Shall we all go forth into the dig site?" He stood, grinning once again. Rani had shown up, so he gave her a smile and a wink before she talked to Wendy. He was wearing remarkably similar robes to the ones he had worn on Darastrix, the only difference being the weight of the fabrics. "Walk with me, I will show the way."

Ralf Valgard, the White Wolf
Dedicated
Varan Adventurer
Roleplay posts: 299
Age: 25
Physical Description: An athletically-built man weighing 160 lbs and standing 6 feet high. He has fierce blue eyes set into a wolfish face. His dark brown hair is usually pulled back into a braid on the back of his head. Well-groomed facial hair, for which he is proud of, covers the bottom half of his face.
=====
Clothes and Equipment: Ralf's primary possessions include his Hirhanic Shield, Mariah's Dagger, his Ancestral Sword, and his Ki'Gar.
The Hirhanic Shield is able to absorb various forms of energy: physical, magical, or otherwise. He can release this energy in the form of shockwaves on command. This item was a gift from his friend Hirhan.
Mariah's Dagger was looted from Mariah's corpse in Aozora. The dagger is able to absorb magical energy from its victims.
Ralf's ancestral sword is of exquisite make; it is an ancient weapon forged in a forgotten age using a rare material. It has the potential to channel 'the Power of the Old Gods', but Ralf is oblivious to this and the weapon is never used.
Ralf's ki'gar, or 'kin garb', is blue with white borders. A white wolf's head is emblazoned in the center, with the family name "VALGARD" written across the bottom. He usually wears the garment as a scarf or cowl.
Currently Ralf carries a a two-handed battle-axe.

One wouldn't realize one had reached the dig site until moments before you fell into the first of the trenches. Here the sand had been replaced with denser oasis mud: the ground became harder, and you would sink less into it. Hirhan led the party down a ramp into a trench which branched off in a bizarre, spider-like pattern. The trench quickly became rather deep: even the taller members of the party would soon be unable to see over the buttressed walls of the trench.
"Welcome to our dig site. As you can see, the workers have been busy. Or rather, were busy. Their digging has been cut short by a discovery, the very one which warranted us taking on your contract."
The magus would lead from the front, though observant people would notice his hand never strayed far from the holster he carried his blasting rod in. The path he took seemed random: they took left turns, and right turns, sometimes descending deeper into the ground before rising up back to the level they started at. Looking at the walls, one would notice the marks of shovels, as well as the occasional imprint of an artifact which had been removed. In the shade of the trench it was cooler than on the desert floor, though not by much. Eventually Hirhan would signal everyone to stop.
"Here we are, the top of the outer wall."
The dirt and clay of the walls and floor had given way to carved stone: the wall of an emplacement. The stone was cut into even, squared rectangles, and was utterly black, devoid of any shine or color. It was clearly not like the sandstone present in the local geography. It was volcanic. Strangest of all was were the burn marks. While most of the wall was orderly and straight like tile, in others it looked like melted chocolate. At places it would appear as if the wall had melted, liquid stone forming strange, curvaceous patterns in places, and inverted bubble-like holes in others.
At the end of the trench was a breach in the floor: a jagged splinter crack wide enough to accommodate a large man, though it would take a squeeze. Peering through the hole, one would see little more than darkness and the faint outline of a sand covered floor.
"After the first worker went missing my colleagues decided to ward this crack tighter than the drawstring of a merchant's coinpurse. Only my colleagues or I can dispel this barrier... unless it is blocking something more powerful than all of us combined. But if that was the case we would be utterly screwed anyway, so no sense worrying! Now that I have shown you around, perhaps you would like to prepare a bit before checking the place out. Ralf, I notice your armor is missing, for instance. Of course, it would likely be wise to rest a bit from your travels a bit, maybe eat something. Up to you all, frankly. I'm not paying you by the hour, after all."
Despite his smile the man was clearly grasping the handle on his blasting rod tightly. Faintly the smell of "the first worker" could be smelt in the air. It is hard to get blood out of greedy desert soil.

Raena Fletcher
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 152
Age: 26
Physical Description: Standing at a height of six feet one inch, Raena Fletcher is a tall, very well-built young woman. Her skin is fairly pale, yet has a slight lively glow, and she has pale blue eyes that speak of a world weariness far beyond her age. Her snow white hair is always cut at about shoulder-length, silky and flowing and always well-kept despite her otherwise Spartan nature. She has full, though never painted lips, hardly ever seeming to turn up in a smile anymore. She has a long, deep scar running up from the bottom of her left jawline to the middle of her left cheek, marring her otherwise unblemished skin. Beneath her right eye, a tattoo in the shape of a fleur de lis has been inked. It looks almost ritual in nature, but its origins are as yet unknown.
================================
Clothes and Equipment: Over her travels, Raena has collected many pieces of heavy armour from her fallen foes and allies alike, melting it down and reforging it into a suit of plate maille unique to her and incredibly sturdy and heavy. The suit is stained forest green with bronze trim, a design embezzled in bronze on both pauldrons, one of a fleur de lis and the other a diving raven. Her bronze gorget has been shaped into the shape of a skull. In addition, a tattered orange-brown cloak wraps around her figure, obscuring her form in battle as well as adding an element of humility to her otherwise splendid armour. She does not tend to wear a helmet into battle, preferring the widest field of view as she can get.
As for armament, she tends to use a heavy enchanted two-handed flamberge sheathed upon her back as her primary weapon, with a short gladius and buckler as a backup. Finally, she carries a set of throwing knives within her cloak, and she's fairly proficient at aiming with them.
Outside of battle, she tends to wear simple linen clothing, preferring function and comfort over form. She hardly ever wears shoes outside her armour, either, having developed well-callused and strong feet to match her hands as a result.

Raena follows behind the group, attempting to ignore Wendy's immediate faceplant, although she can't help it as her lips perk up into a small half-smile. As she follows Hirhan down to the wall, however, something about the entire situation begins to feel off to Raena. The way Hirhan grasps at his blasting rod, the whiff of dried blood in the air, the wards. Hirhan, however, seems to be skirting the answer to a question most curious. "What exactly was the worker's cause of death?" she asks without skipping a beat, ignoring Hirhan's verbose offer.

Hirhan stared at Raena with cold eyes. His smile was faltering, and his tone less academic and more empathetic.
"We don't know. The living man who witnessed the attack was reduced to a gibbering wreck. He tried tearing out his own eyes last night, so he is restrained and put in a tent back in camp. Interview him if you wish, I wasn't able to get anything out of the poor man. There was no corpse."
He closed his eye for a moment, shaking his head. The ordinarily stoic (or manic, dependent on the proximity of cool magical stuff) looking man was, for a moment, remarkably human.
"Judging by what was left of him, I'd have to say the attack was magical in nature. Something big, or a bunch of smaller creatures. Likely daemonic, judging by the astral signatures left behind. I still have a headache after fully assensing this place."
As Wendy examined the stone, he would add.
"He wasn't burnt. The melted walls were always like that. I'd have to guess the early worshipers of the Cult of the Serpent were pyromaniacs just like their modern descendants."

Raena nods, her flat expression unaffected. "Indeed, I would like to speak with this man. I believe I will be able to get more from him than you," states Raena, neutrally, "I thank you for the information. I insist that we must speak with the witness before continuing; entering a situation such as this without proper information could result in unnecessary deaths." Her voice is laced with a sense of urgency. "Magic is not something to be trifled with. Especially daemons," she continues in explanation, "I am sure you agree."

"I'll lead the way back then, if there are no objections."
If there weren't any Hirhan would lead on, dragging the party through the labyrinth of trenches. In time they would emerge again at the base camp. Near the center of the camp was a small white tent, though the outer canvas had been drawn on sloppily in black with wide brushstrokes.
DANGER
Hirhan would pull open the flap of the tent, revealing the man inside. He looked feverish, with beat-red skin and wild, bloodstained eyes. He was tied to a chair tightly by thick cords. Upon seeing Raena he began to shout gibberish.
"Good luck."

Raena thanks Hirhan with a nod and steps into the tent, moving toward the man and pulling a chair up before him. She sits down upon the chair and stares into the man's eyes, her pale blue eyes scouring his own, finding fear and madness in equal measure. Clearly, this man's psyche was damaged. She has a thought, then. The language of The Void could often be understood best by those who had gone mad -- a good portion of the Cult's priesthood consisted of those who had spent far too much time within The Void's depths. Raena begins to speak, then, in that horrible language that grates and pulls upon one's psyche, scratching at their mind. "Ka uai ifkylzsofk ty?" she asks, her inflection clearly indicative of a question.

The man giggled a bit, staring at Raena with wild eyes. He closed his mouth. Raena would see his jaws were pressing downward, until... The man lurched forward, spitting out at the woman as he fell. From his mouth came a spray of blood, along with the man's tongue. Both were aimed at his interrogator, in an attempt to temporarily blind her. Others watching would see the man struggling against his bonds with superhuman effort- they wouldn't hold for long. For now he would scream as his muscles tore themselves open, the sound garbled and warped by the rush of blood from his mouth.
He wouldn't be talking much.

"Bleh...." Wendy spat out in disgust. Water tendrils formed on her back from the watersacks on her belt, which in turn picked the cut tongue from the sand and washed it off.
"IgotitIgotit!" She said in a panicked tone. The tendril forced itself into the man's mouth and began to glow as it reattached the tongue. Two more thicker tendrils shot outward and slammed the man back into his seat, holding him place as they too glowed and began to fix the damage caused by trying to escape his bonds.
