Men began to die on the wall. Weapons were saved and the dead were carried off. For now there were plenty of forces to replace them.
"The city is silenced, my lord." A lean faced advisor spoke to the commander of the defences. "We cannot fight back with magic while within the walls." Orders were given and the lean man nodded eagerly, "Is it time to unleash the Dragon Slayer?" It was not time.
The infantry major was astonished, "Take all these men outside the wall? It's madness!"
"The commander says if we don't attack now all is lost."
Soon the main gate would begin to open. The bridge lowered to reveal Goraia's own cavalry counter attack.

“Hmmh,” remarks Lady Naoki. She squints toward the indicated spot on the wall, seeing as how Lamina has appropriated her spyglass. She sees something but isn’t quite sure if it’s the silver haired man or a dull helmet. In either case, she noticed the man in her initial inspection; he seems to have been standing on the walls for a while, now.
After a few moments pass, Naoki says, “Very well.”
What exactly she means by that isn’t expanded upon verbally. However, after another, much shorter pause, she continues, “Have you ever ridden a horse before?”

Upon some silent signal, the First Legion begins change formation to prepare for what would seem like cavalry. At this point, it is worth again exploring the composition of the Legion. While none of the cohorts are comprised only of soldiers with the same equipment, they are themed. The two principal components of the Legion are the heavy infantry of the First, Second, Third, and Fourth, and the archers of the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth. The legions of heavy infantry are comprised primarily of soldiers in partial and full plate armor. They all carry large, rectangular shields, and wield a mix of spears, pikes, and different sorts of swords. As a secondary element, a significant number of Enclave healers and warding magic specialists are also part of these cohorts. Meanwhile, the archers are comprised primarily of just that. The majority of them carry longbows, as Isra’s most highly trained marksmen. Among them, there is a fair number who carry crossbows. Those who carry crossbows have somewhat heavier armor compared to the longbows, and also carry a short sword and small shield, giving them some modest ability to engage in melee combat. Additionally, a smattering of Enclave battle mages and warding specialists are part of The Fifth through Eighth. The two remaining cohorts are specialized for sieges. The majority of their soldiers are spearmen who have also been trained in battlefield engineering, at least so much as to be able to assemble and operate siege weaponry. Along with them, there are a handful of the marksmen as mentioned earlier, a significant number of Enclave battle mages and defenders. When moving, these cohorts bring with them the necessary supplies to perform their task of assembling and operating siege weapons and building fortifications. Lumber, boulders, bolts, logs, all of that. In any case, the Legion follows the orders handed down to them from Lady Naoki, and brace for cavalry. Lines of spearmen at the front, pointy end pointing out, shields raised, almost shoulder to shoulder. The archers pull out their arrows and load their crossbows, in preparation for firing. The longbows would, upon direction, fire in an arc toward the cavalry, with the intention of landing the volley on them before they can close the distance. Those griffin riders who are not part of the Dawn Rider offensive come to hover in a few positions roughly central to New Birimarde, and open their saddlebags. From their saddlebags, pieces of paper begin to fall. In a manner not dissimilar to snow, hundreds of bits of parchment drift down to land all across the city. Each one reads as follows. To the commander of this garrison, soldiers and officers within, and whomever else this may concern, You must surrender. Consider the following: You are outnumbered, out supplied, totally isolated. My army is backed by the industrial power and economic strength of The Free States of Isra. We will continually be resupplied and reinforced until the inevitable victory is obtained. You are backed by nothing. You have no more than what is within your city at this present moment, and will receive no aid. You will have no resupplies. There is no cavalry coming. If you continue to resist, you will either run afoul of Isran arrow or steel, or face death by starvation. None of those possibilities are particularly appealing, I would think, yet they are all but certain if you do not surrender. In the event of your surrender, the following will be offered to all officers and soldiers: You will be treated pursuant with the International Accord of Universal Rights and Protections. You will not be killed without just cause. You will not be tortured without just cause. You will be fed, and clothed, treated humanely, and kept in hospitable conditions. The above applies to all who surrender or are captured, regardless of rank or position. You will not be charged with war crimes for the first 90 days of your surrender, or until such time as order is fully restored. If you do not surrender, the following will be offered to all officers and soldiers: You will die. Please consider this offer, and send a response at your earliest convenience. No messengers will come to harm, nor any who approach with intent to surrender. This offer will stand indefinitely, and applies to any and all of you. To the rank and file soldiers receiving this message: if your officers and commanders ignore your wellbeing and drag you into such an impossible fight, know that we will receive every soldier wishing to surrender, be it one man or one hundred, with the same assurances as above. ~High Lady Naoki of Isra, However, Goraia’s cavalry may experience some difficulties on account of the result of Jun’s druidic magic, which was performed with the express intent of blocking the gate, preventing it from opening outward, and severely impeding prevent anyone inside New Birimarde from exiting, especially large groups. Additionally, it should be noted that The Dawn Riders, ( The Free States of Isra ) ride griffins, which fly. An example of a Dawn Rider officer can be seen in Knight-Captain Calgary , riding his griffin. As such, tactics for dealing with traditional horse cavalry would not necessarily be effective against The Dawn Riders. In fact, there are no horses to be seen anywhere in Isra's joint attack force. (Due to the aforementioned mistake, I will assume that the archers were able to target the riders but the ballista were not able to do so)
The arrow launched at him pinged harmlessly off of his shield, the swarm of arrows performing poorly against the first groups. Many of the griffins were as large or larger than a bear, and of similar constitution, one arrow was very rarely sufficient to bring the armored Dawn Riders down, but a couple did fall, the rest continuing to shower the walls in a constant stream of arrows and javelins. The siege engines were targeted by the other group, carrying pots of flaming pitch or using flaming ammunition to ignite them. The Raiders would continue this pattern, making it very deadly for anyone to pop up from cover as they flew overhead, their cyclical flow being in the vertical plane almost directly above the walls of the city.

Jun stared listlessly out at the battlefield. She noted the anti-magic field deployment, preventing magical spells from being fired in or out of the city. Of course the ocean was mostly anti-magic free, as was the ship.
"Mm."
She pointed the tip of Resonance into the air. A single pulsating sphere of red energy crystallized just over it. As the seconds went by the sphere would become larger and brighter. The air whipped about her and grew cold while the point grew ever hotter. (Charge 1)
Blackbean started hopping around the deck, examining everything he came in contact with curious avian eyes and the occasional peck.
Jun began to whistle a random tune.

Gothmog stood at the helm of the Depravity and watched the battle unfold with a smirk on his face.
"Load the weapons and prepare to fire but wait for my signal! Let's see if these bastards surrender first."
The Goraians had a limited window in which to respond to the dropped surrender notes, and should they fail to deliver a satisfactory response in the time it took him to get in range, he would begin to shell the city.
"Half sail! We move towards the city!" the ship began to slowly move towards the harbor, weapons loaded and clearly aimed at the city.

Age: 31
Physical Description: She is slightly above average height for a woman, about 5'10" and weighing a bit more at a 190lbs. She has medium-length platinum blonde hair, and a rather feminine face. It is the stern look in her eye that gives her face its hard edge, accompanied by the numerous bruises and scars that are a result of years of military service. Her figure is relatively slender, compacted with muscle from years of training and a strict nutrition regime.
Clothes and Equipment: Ana wears the traditional armor of an Isran Centurion, complete with the red sash and the Isran sigil on her breast. The armor is fitting to what curves she does have, and, given that the Lady Naoki had a say in the armor, probably accentuates them. She wields her sword, a weapon of no particularly special properties beyond good craftsmanship and having been lovingly maintained by generations of Haels. Her legionnaire's shield completes the image of a stalwart Isran warrior.

Centurion Hael sprang into action, digging equipment falling to the ground en masse as her cohort drew weapons and formed up.
"Prepare to receive unwelcome visitors!" she shouted down the line, drawing her sword and taking her place in the center of the front line. Spears lowered to form a seemingly impenetrable wall of pointy steel and iron resolve. Her cohort was directly opposite the gate, and would this receive the brunt of the attack. Her archers knew their stuff, and would open fire as soon as the charge was in range.

She had always wanted to ride a horse. Lamina pulls her gaze from the tower, feeling secure that her mark is going nowhere. She hands the spyglass back to her superior, her hand coming off its grip on Ishtaroth's hilt. <End of our post order>

"Get those ballistae off the wall!" Alfher waved at various sections. A two young runner dashed down the walls to relay his orders. Alfher did not take cover. He strode confidently down the wall whilst giving orders, "Stay close to the parapet. Group at the gate. Stay under cover!" Archers huddled close to the wall, returning fire when they could. The infantry men did a good job keeping their shields at angles above the parapet.
Arrows landed all around Alfher but the general seemed not to mind. Jars of burning pitch exploded against stone and shields. The flaming resin would leave grievous wounds, but would not likely kill unless striking someone directly. Arriving at the gate Alfher unsheathed his sword and began hacking at a bombless vine. "Clear these vines. Protecting this gate is our task." Alfher raised his shield and stepped back, allowing the men to do the rest.

On the wall the defenders were able to free the gate of vine. Yet, casualties were taking their toll. Explosions of burning pitch caused chaos and broke holes in the shield line. Burning men rolled on the rampart, fell from the wall, or were taken out by arrows. Screams of agony began to rise from the city.
Above the gate defenses were more effective. As the soldiers gathered their moral was bolstered by General Alfher. Tighter shield walls were formed and the defenders held. However, against an aerial force their efforts to return fire was noneffective.
As the front gates lowered a cacophonous clanking of chains emanated from within the city. The drawbridge was lowered and the cavalry thundered across the bridge. They turned their course off the bridge and went east, staying close to the wall out of range of the enemy archers. Within the gate a group of infantrymen could be seen in formation.
Within the city, near the Siege Workshop, the Dragon Slayer was loaded.

“Well, if you had, I would have said that riding a griffin is not entirely dissimilar to riding a horse, but I suppose the comparison isn’t relevant.”
As Lady Naoki is speaking, griffin-rider pairs ascend from the decks below to stand behind her on the weather deck. The Depravity, while not a dedicated vessel to the same extent that the Dawn Rider vessels are, has been built to accommodate a small group of griffins. Currently, these accommodations are being utilized by Sun Marshal griffins, and it is these griffins that now stand on the deck, along with their riders.
“In any case,” Naoki continues, “their leadership must be removed. The only reason this pitiful excuse for a garrison is still making an effort is because there is someone in command over there lying to them, telling them they still have a chance.” One may pick up on a bit of bitterness in her tone at this. As she sees it, whoever’s in charge over there is either outrageously stupid or stupidly enamored by some worthless ideal like 'glory'. There isn’t any glory to be had in refusing to surrender at the cost of oh so many lives that are not yours to waste.
Pausing for a moment, Lady Naoki takes one step toward Lamina, to draw her attention and make eye contact to make sure her next line is delivered with the appropriate emphasis, “So mount up.”
After pausing the appropriate amount of time for dramatic effect, Lady Naoki, utilizing the end of the spyglass, gestures toward the griffins. The Sun Marshal riders seem to be about as Sun Marshals tend to be, though they are all wearing similar combinations of medium metal and leather armor, and carry short bows and bladed weapons of one type or another. The griffins wear armor is that seems quite similar to the armor one would find on a Dawn Rider griffin, save for a Sun Marshal badge being in the place of a Dawn Rider insignia.
Upon cursory inspection, one would be able to see that one of the saddles is of the two-seated variety, and seems all but entirely unused. The griffin the double-saddle is affixed to seems to be named Eleanor, and the Sun Marshal leading Eleanor is Robin, according to their badges. Robin seems to be a tall woman, of somewhat strange proportions. It’s difficult to lay one’s finger on, but something about the way she’s structured that doesn’t seem quite right. But in any case, Robin seems professional enough and proceeds to mount Eleanor first, before turning expectantly toward Lamina.

The First Legion continues to sit right where it is, in the fortifications they’ve built. Given the extra time, they proceed in reorganizing their formation some. The spear, pike, and shield-toting infantry remain as the outer layer, as one might expect. Those wielding crossbows separate from the archers, and come to stand among and behind the melee infantry, in such a manner that if the cavalry opt to come into range for an attack, it would be very easy to let loose a barrage of crossbow bolts right into them without having to worry about arcing or any of that.
And indeed, if the cavalry does opt to come into range, that is what they will do. The archers remain in the center of the formation, arrows nocked, prepared to draw and fire on a moment’s notice. At the rear of the legion’s formation, the supplies are being picked up and moved by the engineers, who bring the supplies into the formation, behind the protection of the legion.
After dropping their messages all over the city, the high-altitude griffin riders return to their ship without incident.
The transport ship that is anchored is continuing to unload its cargo, which is then moved into the protection of the legion.

Eloria suddenly tilted her head as though listening to something, then leaned over as her broom hovered upward an additional few feet, until she was dangling upside-down, her legs wound around the shaft to keep her from falling. She reached out with gloved hands, her fingertips glowing gold as she touched the glyph. Magic crackled while she rearranged the intricate circles and symbols contained within the glyph, resulting in its nature changing ever so slightly; it would no longer require her as a focusing device, and would instead draw mana directly from the world around them, albeit at a slower, more steady rate.
With that done, it freed up her ability to act again, and she quickly shot up into the air. She began to draw in massive amounts of mana, while a quintet of glyphs began to slowly form around her, in five different shades and designs: Brown, teal, red, silver, and white.

The red point of light rose up higher into the sky like the morning star. It illuminated half the deck of the Depravity in a warm glow. However, contrary to expectation, the surface of the ship grew colder, not warmer.
Jun raised her enchanted shield into the air above her head, along with her sword. From within a blue gem inset into the shield, great tendrils of water materialized. They whipped about and up until they coalesced into a sphere between her head and the light. Like a giant magnet, the liquid sphere attracted more and more water from her surroundings. Great tentacles of water reached up from the ocean into the sphere, making it larger and larger.
All of the kinetic energy from the molecules in the air, and in the water, flowed into the glowing star light. While it grew hotter and hotter, the water dropped to freezing temperatures. It was starting to morph and solidify into a massive, icy object. The shape was a cone-like, melted plate. There were distinct drape-like ridges around its edges. It had a hollowness to it, but its rounded tip was strong as steel. The object was designed to withstand incredible impact force from either directly in front, or behind. But it was definitely aimed forward...

“Well, if you had, I would have said that riding a griffin is not entirely dissimilar to riding a horse, but I suppose the comparison isn’t relevant.” As Lady Naoki is speaking, griffin-rider pairs ascend from the decks below to stand behind her on the weather deck. As she sees it, whoever’s in charge over there is either outrageously stupid or stupidly enamored by some worthless ideal like ' glory'. There isn’t any glory to be had in refusing to surrender at the cost of oh so many lives that are not yours to waste. Pausing for a moment, Lady Naoki takes one step toward Lamina, to draw her attention and make eye contact to make sure her next line is delivered with the appropriate emphasis, “So mount up.”After pausing the appropriate amount of time for dramatic effect, Lady Naoki, utilizing the end of the spyglass, gestures toward the griffins. The girl nodded to Naoki in silence. It was now that Lamina began to worry a little bit about what could go south. The thought of flight suddenly became scary, as did flying towards the enemy. Yet she fought any corrosive doubt that came her way, dutifully saddling up on the griffin assigned to her, placing some confidence in Ishtoreth should something go catastrophically wrong. She was as prepared as she could have been for her task. She had at her right hip her trusty mortuary sword, and at her left, a hooksword of appropriate proportions to its wielder. Her armor currently represented itself as a knife of bone affixed to her left hip inches from the exotic blade. Then, the griffins took off, on Robin's cue. She clutched hard to the beast's saddle and felt a lurch. She tried to fend off the anxiety of flight as she suddenly noticed the sun glinting off small waves of water beneath her, and each mighty flap of its majestic wings brought her higher and higher above the ocean, leaving behind the Depravity, which became the size of a small toy at an alarming rate...

He saw the Sun Marshal Riders take off from the Depravity , doing his best not to scowl even as he maintained a view of his battlespace. Calgary had fought with Liz for weeks about giving up some of his senior nco's to the Sun Marshals, but he had not won that argument.
His Riders kept up there assaults, splitting a tad differently this time as he signalled for them to assault the walls away from the gatehouse, the stalwart defense provided there unsurprising to the veteran Captain. It was the weakest point in the wall from a ground attack, so he would attack where they were weaker, either forcing the troops there to flee to the stronghold rapidly forming at the gatehouse, or forcing the stronghold's soldiers to spread out and thus weakening it. They continued their attack pattern on the helpless and hapless soldiers manning the wall.

A wide grin plastered itself on the face of the massive orc captain. It had been too long since he had given this order.
"FIRE ALL!"
Gothmog's booming voice echoed throughout the hull of the ship, the navigator next to him actually wincing in momentary pain. For a moment, nothing happened, then the massive catapults on deck and the ballistas on the starboard side opened up, sending their flaming payload squarely at the sections of the wall, and those defending it, nearest the water.

Centurion Analiese Hael
Committed
Roleplay posts: 50

Analiese watched with a small amount of disappointment as the cavalry moved along the wall. They were either fleeing or trying to flank the 1st Legion. Their numbers were too few in either eventuality, and she maintained her focus on the infantry clearly visible beyond the open gate.
"Maintain readiness legionnaires!"
It seemed to her they were setting the stage for something, but what that was she had no idea.
(This is the end of the Isran turn order)

Post by Empress Naoki on Feb 26, 2017 1:38:38 GMT -8
Standing on the deck of The Depravity, Lady Naoki continues to look out over the battle with her spyglass. Through it, she spots a waving flag. A white flag, the first surrender. A group of soldiers on the wall have dropped their weapons and seem to have fashioned a flag from someone’s shirt, which they are waving frantically.
Excellent.
Her mouth curving into a perhaps-suspiciously wicked grin, Naoki begins to issue a new set of orders, commanding the beginning of the occupation.
