Even with her height, Calgary was far larger than her in terms of mass, his weaponry and armor heavy. He had previously been in charge of the Dawn Rider Heavy Company, a Company of heavy armor, heavy weapons, and even heavier griffins. They were the tip of the spear, using their weight to hold the enemy down while the others outflanked and surrounded the foe.
It had been they who had shattered the troll phalanx during the Spring Eyrie Siege, they who had waded unimpeded through the undead horde in Aeadan, slaying all in their path and keeping the undead reinforcements from coming upon the rear of the defending army. They were second only to the 1st Company, which was charged with protection of City and Citadel.
Calgary could immediately see Eilagwen was no fit for the Heavies, elves rarely were, but the Light Company or Naval Companies would be a good fit should she make it through training.
He moved quick for his size, not as fast as her, but with considerable power as the warhammer was swung down towards he shield side.

She could take -a- hit from the man standing before her, more solid than he thought, but it would not be a -comfortable- taking, and not one that she'd want to do multiple times. He was right to guess that she might not be a perfect fit for Heavy -- and he was also right in that she was faster.
She moved, taking a step away from his swing instead of taking the mace to her shield, maneuvering so that the mace glanced against the shield's angle, throwing weight behind her shield arm so it might send his mace wide and leave him vulnerable for her own swing into the pocket she'd created, peripheral vision keeping sight on his shield and mace.

The hammer was brought down with tremendous force, glancing the shield as intended but not opening any gaps. The warhammer was fully in his control, and his recovery was swift, stepping away from her mace hand and towards her shield hand, using the shift to move his shield up and catch her blow.

Her spiked mace cracked against his shield, the hollow sound ringing out in the room as the spikes scraped against its outside and she jerked it back in her hand, the weight balanced, her shield coming back into her defense. She did not push forward for the attack -- she was not stronger than him, and pitting her strength against his would be foolish.
Instead, she would have to wait, and try to catch him off his equilibrium by getting him to throw his weight behind an attack and catch him off guard. Her pale, meadow-green eyes watched him from over the rim of her shield, waiting.

The man barely moved as the mace cracked against his shield, the impact resounding through the chamber.
"The Dawn Riders are constantly in motion, for then we are the hardest thing to hit on the battlefield. You stop, and you become the easiest..." and he remained true to form, constantly stepping in a circle, not yet striking at her, but waiting for a weakness to appear, some misstep or miscalculation in her motion.

Eilagwen heard him speak, turning her body to face him as he circled. She did not show any change in her expression, and did not answer what he said. She didn't allow the words to sink into her head. He was taller than her, outweighed her, and could outclass her in strength and was no doubt more used to wielding a mace than she was. Were she on a griffin, perhaps this battle would be different, but they weren't. She'd be stupid to step within his range.

Eilagwen's stoicism, while admirable, was not what Calgary was evaluating her for. He wasn't even overly concerned with her ability to fight, for such things could be trained. He was looking for a spark of sorts, the kind of elan that the Dawn Riders were known for. It was a sort of calculated recklessness that could not be trained, but that one simply possessed.
He continued to circle her slowly, waiting and watching to see if she would attempt anything. Just because the foe was bigger, did not mean you could not hurt it.

She had been calm, had been quiet and composed, predictable even in the way that she had fought the man. She watched him over the edge of her shield, her gaze steady on his face but keeping at the front of her mind where his WARHAMMER hovered, where his feet were stepping--
-- and suddenly vaulted forward, CLASHING her shield with his and swinging her spiced mace toward his head.

That was it! Aggressiveness, and cleverly done.
At the last moment, Calgary slammed his shield out to catch her off guard, his warhammer smacking into the haft of her mace.

Her mace went tumbling out of her hand, and she stepped into the curve of her shield, letting it roll off the front of his own as she tumbled with quick grace to pick up her weapon.
Her defensive position, however, put her on one knee, her shield still in front of her, her spiced mace back in her hand. She was not as familiar with blunted weapons as Calgary was and did much better with a sword, but had chosen the weapon and shield to try and balance the Acting Commodore.

With Eilagwen on the ground, albeit on her knees, Calgary called a halt to the spar. In that position, his victory was inevitable, as he could just use his strength to keep her there.
"That's enough I think. You would make for a good Dawn Rider I think. How do you feel about meeting a griffin?"

She didn't feel as if she deserved the accolade. She was aware that from her position on the lower ground, a victory would be more difficult for her. Still, there was a chance, although coupled with her lack of experience with a mace (she knew how to wield one, it just wasn't her chosen weapon and so, she hadn't much actual use with the weapon), it was likely that she'd be beaten.
Then again, Eilagwen seemed to understand that it wasn't about winning. She pushed up onto her feet with agile grace and nodded her head. "That would be satisfactory," the elven woman said, monotone and bland as she moved to put her weapon and shield back where she'd found them and arm herself with her own weaponry once more.

Calgary sighed as he hung up the shield on the wall. This elf had as much personality as a wet sock, but there was a semblance of a spark at least, and he wasn't about to turn down a prospective Rider just for being as expressive as a slug. Although that was a tad mean to slugs. Were all elves this unexpressive?
"You...uh...is something wrong?"

She was bland, she was unexpressive, she was trained to be straight-faced and unemotional. No, not even just unemotional. Apathetic. She could endure many different types of torture -- mental, emotional, and physical -- and part of that training had eeked into being part of her personality.
Or lack there of.
The elegant elf looked at Calgary, no change of expression on her face. As straight-forward as she had been at the Prospernalia End's Feast. "Yes," she answered absolutely.
And then, the faintest expression. A very soft, a very mild, a very vague... frown of concern.
"Have I upset you in some way, Acting Commodore?" she asked Calgary, her intense eyes focused right onto his face.

"Not in the slightest, you're just very...expressionless." He said, cautiously. His tone was certainly not mean, more inquisitive than anything else.
"I mean no offense Eilagwen, but most, hell, all of our Riders are a lot more...boisterous. We attract a certain personality type. At least among humans, but I have little experience with your people. Again, I mean no offense, but why do you want to be a Dawn Rider?"

She blinked. Once. At this remark that she was expressionless, as Eilagwen remained... expressionless. Her pale eyes just looked steadily back at the Acting Commodore. She had seen for herself how boisterous he was, remembering with clarity the night before. She knew that he was attracted to beauty, but now she could see that he was attracted to personality as well, if only because he was expecting more from her.
"The Dawn Riders have a reputation of being excellent warriors and maintaining an honorable code of chivalry as it pertains to their people and their city. It would be an honor to serve among such ranks and integrity," she answered back, her voice steady and calm, if lilting lightly due to the foreign accent of being from a hidden elven city. Her answers were plain and to the point, rarely using adjectives in general -- but she used so for the Dawn Riders, implying that this staid and stoic person must care on some deeper level about the Dawn Riders and being among their number.
"Is it necessary that I be more... boisterous, Acting Commodore?" she asked, always formal, always toeing the line of duty.

The prestige was what attracted her, or the honor, a sense of being elite or something. Not an unusual motivation, in fact it was almost universal. Everyone who joined had their own reasons, that all boiled down to that very reason. The Griffin was the real test anyway, if after all the training a Griffin did not accept her, then she was a washout, but the griffins weren't as concerned about how boisterous her personality was.
"Be whoever you are, I was merely curious, not concerned."

She continued to look placidly at him, and then spoke.
"I was not raised, nor trained, nor did I live within an environment where emotions were publicly displayed, Acting Commodore," she told Calgary. "I was taught that emotions hinder ability rather than aide it. Would you agree with that statement?"

"I would disagree with that statement. Losing control to you emotions is certainly a hindrance, but that is a matter of self-control. But fighting against something you hate, or even better, for something you love...makes a soldier better. Whether it is for the Rider at your side, the griffin you ride on, or your family back home, having something to fight for is intrinsically linked to your emotions."
As he spoke, he began to lead the way down another hallway, this one was not filled with sparring soldiers or even soldiers taking a break from their duties. Instead, they all seemed to be preoccupied with something, and the occasional screech could be heard behind many of the doors they passed.

She walked with him, listening to him as he spoke even as her gaze watched her surroundings. The elf was as composed in her physical nature as she was in her verbal one.
"While I agree that a level of passion in one's endeavor makes for exemplary commitment and increases chances of success, emotions themselves can become a hindrance and increase the chance of mistakes." Eilagwen was beginning to feel, however, that she wouldn't quite fit in with the Dawn Riders... and was beginning to doubt that a griffin would choose her. "Getting too emotionally involved is dangerous," she mentioned, "and I hope that it will not a challenge to the Dawn Riders if I remain aloof."
There was the smallest note of concern in her voice. Clearly, Eilagwen had not acclimated well in her transition from the Elven world to the human one.
