In the kingdom of Gauldin there is an seaside county named La Côte Rocheuse. It is under the rulership of Lord Audric Noyé, the Comte de la Côte Rocheuse. There are scatterings of villages and forts dotting the land but in only one such place does the Comte spend most of his time: Château de la Mer. This castle by the sea dates back to when La Côte Rocheuse was first unified by the Noyé family a few centuries ago. It is their ancestral home. And while, of course, some parts of the structure are forbidden to visitors, guests are always welcomed whether they come by ship or by one of the many roads leading to the rest of Gauldin.

The Lord returns to his castle after weeks away hunting pirates. In his office, the various functionaries that keep his fief running visit him one-by-one, bringing him up to speed on all that has happened while he was at sea. This baron has a problem with a recent storm washing out a road near the river. That baroness complains of a neighbor's sheep herds grazing on her lands. Nothing serious. No reports of bandits or those damned pirates.
Audric sighs when the last flunky walks out of his office. Things are quiet in the Kingdom of Gauldin these days. Outside of the old King's death a few years ago and the rise to power of his pretend-peasant son, of course. Or that strange business with the Queen disappearing. Maybe he shouldn't think about it lest he bring forth something that wakes Gauldin up.

The day after Lord Noyé returns to Château de la Mer, a small sailing ship returns as well. Flying the single fleur-de-lis flag of La Côte Rocheuse, it has been on its own anti-piracy mission, a scouting trip to distant islands well off normal trade routes. While this time the ship found no large pirate base—certainly not the pirates Lord Noyé wanted the most—it did find something of interest.
A runner from the ship is sent from the docks up to the castle to find the Comte in his office and inform him of the discovery.

The Adamant had returned less than an hour ago, his aides tell him, and now the ship's boy is in his office saying that there is something on the ship he needs to see. Any excuse to be done with the county's paperwork and to be down by the sea is a good excuse. So Audric follows the boy.
He makes his way down the stone stairs to the docks. This distance from the cooking fires, stables, and pigsties of the castle makes the salty air smell much cleaner, much more as it should be. He likes it down here, the sound of the waves breaking, of gulls cawing, of rope stretching.
One blemish on this sight, however, is the memorial. A bronze bust of his son, dead less than a year, sits on an altar down here by the sea that took him. Audric—the father, now, not the Comte—stands before the memorial as he does every time he comes down to the docks. He once again promises whatever ghost of his son that still haunts this world that he'll punish the criminals that did this. Them and all like them who prey on the good sailors.
There was other business to attend to now, though. Audric straightens up and once more assumes the role of Comte. Time to see what the Adamant brought in from the sea.
