The southern border of Gauldin is lined with a tall and treacherous mountain range. The only safe way through these mountains is through a narrow valley, where a guardhouse has been built. Beside the guardhouse, enterprising citizens have set up stands full of raisin buns and bread and other such snacks. Border policy

Ralf and his warband, which is comprised of only 500 men and women, approaches the narrow valley pass. The mountains make them feel more comfortable here, reminding them of back home in Asgeir. They are lightly equipped, carrying with them only basic armor and weapons. Each one carries a shield, and they all wear their traditional Ki'gars. Though armed, they're not here to fight.
"Stay here," Ralf tells his followers. "Anja if you want to come with me, you may." Ralf rides atop a brown horse and approaches the guardhouse. "Ahem," he clears his throat before speaking. "I am Ralf Valgard, of House Valgard, and these are my brothers and sisters from the realm of Asgeir. We seek new land and opportunity, and we've come to Gauldin to find it. What say you?"
Ralf displays a gleeful intent, and means no harm to the people around.

Not long after Ralf addresses the gate it opens and 5 men on horse back emerge. The man in the middle rides ahead is armor partial but with a bit of flair indicating an officer rank. He is a powerfully built man with a nobleman's face hardened by many battles. His hair is kept close cropped and his full beard meticulously groomed, his hair rich deep black with a few streaks of grey. He says in a heavily accented baritone.
"I am knight commandant Antain of the house Armitage. You say you look for new opportunities? But you do not look like refugees or settlers, you have the look of how you say... gurriers fighters a war band."
His sharp blue eyes take in each and every person present.
"What opportunities do such as you hope to find in Gauldin?"

Anja walks alongside Ralf, watching the Gaulish guards cautiously. She's always wary when going to a new place. Sometimes they don't like witches.

Ralf looks at Anja, then back at the horseman. "Land," he says simply. But he knows the guards want more than that. "My brothers and sisters are warriors, but they're also hardworkers. We seek land to till on, to farm and to hunt, and to raise our children. We're just simple folk who want to start fresh. In return, wherever you allow us to settle, we will protect it with our lives; we will tend the farms and supply your markets with fresh food, lumber, and other items. My warriors will owe their loyalty to your king, and we shall fight for you if you're attacked."
Indeed the Varan were excellent craftsmen, and were natural-born warriors.

"Merde."
Antain swears quietly under his breath before motioning on of his men over they have a quick whispered conversation. Once finished the man rides back into the gate house and Antain says tone friendly if a little forced.
"I must say mon ami this is a new one. We have had immigrant before oui, but 500 all at once? And all of them looking to swear vassalage to the king? I am having my clerk fetched and he will advise me on the legal course of action."
A few minutes later the mounted man returns walking next to him is a mousy looking man in a faded brown robe. He is balding and excessively skinny his face long and angular. The clerk approaches Antain and they whisper for a second it gets a bit heated before the clerk turns toward Ralf. Despite his appearance the clerks voice has a hint of iron in it though you could miss it simply in how he talks.
"Oui, er yes. Monsieur er Sir Ralf was it? Do you speak for all of these people are you er legally allowed to make decisions for them which they must abide by? Er under the laws of your home land that is? What I mean to say are you their lord?"
He stutters and stops adjusting his glasses every third word. Still he doesn't seem overly nervous just scatter brained.

"Er... I am the Warchief, good man," Ralf responds, a little confused. "Warbands leave Asgeir all the time, to raid, trade or settle the land. In this case, we seek to settle and trade with your own people. As of now, they owe allegiance to me, but I will swear my loyalty to your king, if need be. We only seek a place to live, a place to protect, that is all."

The clerk nods whispers something to Antain who then sends a man back into the gate house. The clerk then addresses Ralf again.
"Er yes bon, er thay is to say good. A situation like this has not occurred in oh 238 years but it is not unprecedented. What you require is a writ of land from the king. The formal arrangement must be made between his majesty and the er leader of the foreigners in this case vous er you."
A few minutes later a plain looking young man with feathery blonde hair wearing a robe with a military cut comes out. The young man begins drawing up a circle in the dirt and the clerk watches for a moment then blinks and turns back to Ralf.
"Ah er yes mage Dorian is setting up a er travel spell. You can select um two people to accompany you to Travére where you will meet with the king. The rest of your men will remain um here. They may either camp outside erm we do not have the space to fit everyone but if you have elderly or wounded and they agree to erm disarm they can stay inside."
Antain shoots the clerk a venomous glare clearly that offer had not been discussed before being made. The clerk headless continues speaking.
"If um you are either of the two accompanying you are of a la magie er. That is to say magic persuasion we will have to issue them travel papers before they may go."

"Er... okay?" Ralf, curiously, steps in the circle and looks around. "I reckon if Anja wants to go...?" Ralf looks at her questioningly, but he is otherwise ready to meet the king. "My men will be alright out in the fields for now, they know how to live off the land."

Anja nods.
"Yeah, I'm a magic user. What do I need to do? Fill out some papers? Also, I'll go to see the king. Sounds like fun."
Wilhelm lets out an ethereal squawk. Anja pets the ghost bird soothingly.
"There there, you're alright. You can't possibly be hungry. You're dead."

The clerk produces two pieces of paper having evidently predicted this course of action. He hands the first piece as well a pen to Anja the form is simply asking only for her full name, country of origin, and reason for her visit. The clerk also produces a slim but solid piece of wood for her to write on. He says in his stumbling way as he nods at the bird.
"Oui er yes I gathered. Fill out the form and I can sign your travel papers do not go anywhere with out them. Er sorry for the inconvenience we have had bad experiences with foreign magic users."
He then addresses Ralf and indicate Dorian who is glaring at the man.
"Er Dorian is uh not quite done monsieur please move. Also it is doubtful the king will meet you right away you should tell your men to be ready to wait for er. No more than a week I would think er sorry."

He's very apologetic, thinks Anja. Sounds almost like one of those northerners. Not the tough ones, like the Varans. One of the wimpy ones from...what was it called? That one tribe that made syrup from trees? The Timhortons tribe, that's it. Those guys were always apologizing for everything. Strange, strange people. Delicious syrups, though.
"Huh? Oh, right. No problem."
Pulling a feather pen from her pocket and dipping it into an invisible floating inkwell, the young witch fills out the form and signs her name. Age, occupation, style of magic, blah blah blah...

A portal split the air a fair distance from where the valley guardhouse was. A stately black carriage rolled through it. Two drivers sat on top along with a rather massive fellow who was carrying a large shield.
Grandma looked around at the surroundings, making sure everyone had gotten through in one piece. Upon seeing that all had gone as planned, she stopped channeling in the rune, placing it back into her handbag. The air shimmered once more and the portal snapped shut, leaving no trace it had been there.
After a moment of inspecting a map she had brought along, Grandma gave directions to the driver and the carriage made its way down the road. After about an hour or so of travel, they reached the guardhouse at the valley entrance.
The carriage pulled up to the guardhouse and stopped. Grandma leaned out of the carriage window and prepared to speak to whoever was in charge.

A man in military mage robes approaches the carriage and addresses the older woman.
"Bonjour madam, welcome to Gauldin I am mage Gregorie. Before you travel through our borders all pasangers will need to fill out some paper work. Once you have fulled out the paper work we will issue your travel papers. Those of you with magical abilities will need to keep this paperwork on yourselves at all times."
The mage then hands a sheaf of paper work and a few pens to the old woman. The questions are straight forward: first name, country of origin, reason for visit.

Grandma gave the man a warm smile and nodded at his instructions. She took the papers and handed them out to the others while filling out one herself. After a few minutes of everyone filling them out, Grandma collected all the papers and handed them back to Gregorie.
There were eight papers in total that had been filled out. Grandma had assisted the maids in finishing out theirs as they seemed to be having a bit of trouble answering some of the questions.
“Mr. Gregorie, as you can see by my paper I am mostly here for a bit of sightseeing. Being someone who has lived in Gauldin, are there any specific things you could recommend seeing? Perhaps an event or festival that’s happening? Also, I must say, Gauldin has quite stylish uniforms.” She said this while nodding appreciatively at his military uniform.

Gregorie takes the papers and reads each of them over carefully, he then goes into the guard house returning a few minutes later with a stack of neatly folded papers. He hands out these to each member of Grandma's party personally those with magical abilities receive papers that are in turn enchanted. Gregorie says in an official tone of voice.
"I repeat those of you who us la magie must keep your travel papers on you at all times. You may notice that your papers carry a light enchantment do not attempt to remove or mask this enchantment it will result in your papers igniting. Do not be caught without your papers, if you loose your papers for any reason report to the nearest guard and they will escort you to a guard house where you will be issued new papers."
Formalities out of the way he answers Grandma's question his tone friendlier.
"Oh there are many sights in Gauldin, the countryside is scattered with beautiful villages and vineyards. Niréal has the air ship yards and open air markets. Bayonné is a bustiling port and always has something to see. Travére is currently in the middle of celebrating the king upcoming nuptials so in short anywhere you go I am sure you will find something to keep you entertained. Welcome to Gauldin madames et messieurs, enjoy your stay."
With this Gregorie returns to the guard house.

“I’ll make sure to hang onto these papers then,” Grandma placed the paper in her handbag as she said this.
They seemed quite worried about mages she thought. Maybe this country had had trouble in the past with foreign mages? Still, she was getting a rather odd vibe from this fellow. No matter, she didn’t mind carrying around a small enchantment. Most likely one to monitor magic usage.
“It sounds positively charming, so many sites to see in one nation. If it is as you say, then Gauldin is truly a modern marvel. I suspect I will be enjoying my stay here immensely! May we meet again Mr. Gregorie, farewell for now.”
Grandma gave the man a wave as he made his way back to the guard house. The carriage then made its way through the checkpoint assuming no other stops were required.

A wagon of dark wood, perhaps mahogany, makes its way up through the valley. It has one enclosed large compartment about the size of a room, the roof forming a long half-cylinder that provides eaves over both the front and the back. The compartment has been decorated with vibrant yellows, giving the wagon a festive appearance. In the front the wagon is a wide opening, though a heavy curtain could be pulled over to protect the interior from prying eyes or inclement weather. As the time of day has begun to approach dusk, a fire has been lit inide the wagon and spills out both from a window on the right side and from the opening in the front. Brightly colored lanterns that fade from red to purple to blue and back again by ome arcane mean hang from the eaves. Silhouetted by this light, a woman sits in the opening, holding the reins attached to the two piebald mares drawing the wagon. She wears a brightly colored dress of forgein fashion with a mix of bright jewel tones and firey colors that clash in an aesthetically exciting manner. Spilling out from under the dress is a coiled red serpent's tail that she sits upon comfortably.

When Remelia approaches the gate her wagon is stopped and a guard walks up. The guard is smiling affable at first but when he spots the tail he blanches a bit. He covers this up quickly though and he says politely if a bit rushed.
"Bonjour madam, just un moment S'il vous plaît."
The guard rushes back into the guard house. A few minutes later an older women hair in a tight bun and wearing military mage robes approaches. She has an affable though professional smiles and she says clearly more comfortable than the previous guard.
"Bonjour madam and welcome to Gauldin I assume you wish to cross our borders? This will be no trouble you simply need to fill out the paperwork."
Though Remelia may not be a magic user, she is a magic creature. As such she gets the same explanation that grandma did about the paperwork.

Remelia gives a light tinkling laugh, waving the tip of her tail in a cheeky dismissal as the guard who came out to greet her scurries back inside. Some place just aren't so metropolitan as others. She languidly basks in the golden light of the fire pooling out from her wagon like a hedonist queen as the more severe woman approaches. She gives a soft, friendly hiss and a bright smile at the mage, drawing herelf up off her bed of coils, exposing the orange scales on her underbelly, her upper half proudly held straight. "No problem?" She parrots cheerfully. "My two favorite words. Whatever needs signing I shall sign and we will get you in out of the cold." As she speaks, she sluggishly uncoils further and lean her human body of the edge of the wagon to take the papers.
